Bass stalking snakes???...
Last week while on Lake Cumberland i saw the most amazing thing. I pulled into a cove and started fishing when I notices a 12-14 inch bass cruising the bank. Naturally I made a cast and it scared him off, that when I saw a 2ft snake half in the water half out. The snake must have thought it was time to make a break but when he started to swim the bass came back causing the snake to return to the shoreline. There was no way that bass could have swallowed that snake. Making my way down the back I notices 2 more bass cruising the shallows, again made a cast toward them when I noticed another snake pinned against the bank. Same deal, bass move off snake tries to escape only to have the bass reappear... Strangest thing I've seen in a long time. May happen all the time, the water up here on the Ohio isn't clear enough... Question??? Has any one ever witnessed this?... Dan

Believe it or not i have seen this happen before, matter of fact in a friends pond where we witnessed the same thing to the point that he ran into his house and took one of those huge rubber snakes that was 2 to 3 foot long tied it to his line and cast out into the middle of the pond. bass attacked it every time lol , including one that would have probably went close to 5lbs or better. use to have luck out of a bait they made years ago, it had a hard plastic snake head and you could attach a plastic worm to and was topwater bait. had a blast out of it until they quit making them.

A 14in bass could easily handle a 2ft snake and they do eat them all the time! I once witnessed a bass at MOST 5lb smash and eat a duckling. That was amazing to see, momma duck was heated!
Re: Bass stalking snakes???...
Maybe the snake kept hearing the "JAWS" music...
Re: Bass stalking snakes???...
has anybody used that snake lure that monarchman gave a link for? it looks pretty good!
Re: Bass stalking snakes???...
In the Florida Everglades canals, snake baits are used a lot for big bass. You can catch 10-13 lb bass at night with a black snake pretty regularly if you know where to go. A lot of guys use black surgical tube as well about 18" long to catch them with; the really big bass down there don’t bite much during the day mostly at night. First time I saw a 13lb bass I could not believe the size of it, they are amazing.

Several years back before the dam work happened at Greenbo Lake,I was fishing the banks in the arm below the lodge there and saw several huge bass that ignored everything I threw at them ,but did the same thing chased water snakes along the rock ledges close to the bank, the water was very clear, smaller bass were doing the same thing.Only thing I had to imitate the snakes movement was an ancient rapala type triple jointed minnow type lure, except it was bigger than minnow size,a hand-me-down from an old relatives tackle box.Didn't work either.

I've never seen a bass do that but I did have a cottonmouth stalk me at peabody a few years back!
