First Post ever on the hunting board......almost put it on OT....
So, with this kid being convicted in Washington State for killing a hiker.....I wonder about youth hunting.

I started VERY EARLY as a hunter, and while I don't hunt any longer, I suspect most here are VERY SAFE.
With that being said.......I think a parent who has a child that KILLS or injures someone else while hunting should lose their priviliges forever.....
The reasoning is simple......the kid in question was hunting in the fog, CLEARLY had not seen is quarry, and SHOT anyways......this goes DIRECTLY against EVERYTHING I've been taught about hunting. ANYONE who'd pull the trigger in this instance was obviously taught incorrectly.
What do you guys think.......
Later,
Geo

I started very early as well, like as soon as I could walk enough to keep up.I learned to be safe from my father and older brothers, read everything I could find on hunting, took classes in elementary school given by our local CO.This in the early 60's when seeing a deer was a rare occasion and turkeys didn't exist in my part of Kentucky.
That said I don't have any problem with a kid starting early provided they are under direct supervision of a qualified adult.I personally knew a 14 year old boy that shot his uncle in the abdomen while bow hunting for deer.I always thought the kid was goofy as he lived down the road from our farm and they were a strange family. This boy was in a stand by himself and shot his uncle coming through brush at dark to get him,I guess the boy mistook him for game.THe uncle survived ,but was never right again.

when i was too young to hunt i remember my dad taking my older cousin deer hunting, it was gun season.
it was 1st day and they arrived home very early and can remember my cousin coming up the sidewalk crying, my dad behind him chewing his ass.
i guess my cousin took a shot and when my dad went over to see if he got something, he said he didn't know all he saw was something brown in the weeds and he shot at it!
wrong thing to say to the old man....i guess he tore up his hunting license right on the spot chewed his ass out really bad and he was done for the year. i got yelled at too and i wasn't even there...lol...but we both learned a valuable lesson...always make sure of your target before you squeeze the trigger.
