Lakes at Blue Grass Army Depot
I've heard that there are some lakes at the Depot south of Richmond and that the fishing can be pretty good. I would think the security would be pretty tight, getting in that place, but wonder if anyone has fished the Depot and if it's worth the hassle.

Yea, it's good fishing out there but its been a while since I've been. My grandma and Grandpa use to work out there and they had a pass to fish out there. I know they use to let the public fish in some of there lakes. They use to have little aluminum boats you could use, or you could bring your own, nothing else though. There's Upper Vega, Lower Vega, Lake Buck, Lake Gem (I think that's what it was called) and the Rock Quarry which is back in R2 so they probably wont let you in there its got trout and giant cats. Vega is probably the best by far for crappie and Bass. All this was pre 9-11 so idk how things have changed I know they would look through your truck and tackle boxes and they made sure you had a fire extinguisher otherwise you can fish. Hope this helps.

The lakes out there are really good. Like RC5 I haven't been in a long while but you used to be able to go in the entrance at 25/421 where the golf course and pool are. I know shortly after 9-11 they closed off the golf course, pool, and lakes to the public but I've seen some signs on 52 saying the golf course is now open to the public. When I used to go the security wasn't that bad. They usually made you open the trunk and had a quick look around the car. We used to catch some really nice ones out of there. Let us know if you get in and how it was.
Re: Lakes at Blue Grass Army Depot
I saw a few of the lakes a few years back and they were low and eat up with weeds. I could have fished it but it wasn't worth the headache. We have had alot more rain since then so maybe they have filled back up.
Re: Lakes at Blue Grass Army Depot
Lake Vega is big and very good I hear but you have to be military to fish it. The other lakes all almost went dry and arent worth the effort I hear.

Given the stuff they store at the depot, it would scare the heck out of me to fish there. Just can't imagine what kinds of teenage mutant fish might be prowling there. The 42 eyed Walleye, or the fish with the head of a bass and the body of an octopus, or Gar that is 21 feet long and has 16 legs......

The KY Fish and Wildlife website has the base listed as a fishing and hunting site. Here's what they say:

LOL...I thought the same thing :p. Since then I have worked in and around he Chemical Limited Area and things are very safe around there. We installed alot of the warning systems there as well as CCTV.
I always felt that if I see a dead cow, deer, turkeys or birds around there I'm putting my mask on and taking off!:p
