Man, it was HOT outside..........REALLY HOT.
We caught 5 fish, and had 4-5 other bites that were missed.
2 on a crankbait and 3 on a brush hog........
NOT bad.........one was pushing 3lbs.

Oh well.
I went again last night.........Caught 2 fish, had options on 4 others......Broke off something HUGE....
Found some great areas I want to try for transition smallies later in the fall, and maybe in March......
So, anyone know just how good the smallie population is in Patoka?
Also, the fish I hooked that broke of basically cut through 20lb braid.......Are there still decent northerns........Maybe it was a walleye.......hm.

Geo, A few years ago (6-7) I was deer hunting near a shore line with a weed bed. I could see some really large fish so got the binoculars out and they were pike. When I quit hunting I took the boat over there but could not get a hit. I have not seen any since that day.
I have caught more smallies the last couple of years than all the rest of the time I have fished the lake. Think we have a good thing starting up. Walleyes and smallies, got to learn some new techniques.

Are they stocking smallies.

Don't think so. There has always been some in the lake and while I do not claim any expertise at all my thoughts are that the lake is changing and becoming more favorable for them. I have caught them near the dam and near King's so they are well distributed.
Man, I remeber being really young and my parents had a fishing camp on patoka. My dad and I would sit on the bank and catch pike all day long off of minnows. I'll never forget that. One of my best memories of being really young and fishing with my dad. One thing I have always wondered what exactly happened to the pike in that lake?
I have caught some real nice smallies in the last 2 years. I don't think they are stocking Smallies the Lake is just better suited to them now. I have only seen 1 pike in the last 5 years.
There are still some pike in Patoka. It could also have been a big striper.
There was a nice limit of smallies @ a Got2loveit tourney there this year. I think it was 17lbs!? All smallies. Some people have said that the lake bottom is starting to get more exposed rock and the smallies are loving it.
Wouldn't it be awesome if a few years from now Patoka would be like Champlain? One would have to make a decision on whether to go after smallmouth or largemouth for a limit. Either way could possibly earn a winning check.
