Re: lowrance hds5 problems
That's not the first problem I've heard about the new HDS units. I've heard they are junk from numerous owners. Great display but funcionality is bad. That's just what I heard because I don't own one. I'm still trying to hunt down a couple of the LCX28's.
Re: lowrance hds5 problems
I had originally heard the structure scan add on transducer was going to be $699, a guy at BPS the other day said it may only be $299. That would be a little better, but if the main unit doesn't work, it won't do you any good.
Re: lowrance hds5 problems
My HDS5 got wet and went crazy! I sent it back to Lowrance and they sent me a new one, no questioned ask. These units are really sensitive to electrical currents. I had mine attached to the trolling motor battery, thinking "one less thing on my cranking battery" and it wouldn't work. It would shut down or blink when the trolling motor came on. I switched it to the cranking battery and it works fine.

Re: lowrance hds5 problems
A friend of mine purchased one of these this spring and has had nothing but problems. He hasn't purchased the side imaging yet, but he stated that he had spoken to lowrance and there was quite a wait on service calls on these new units.
Re: lowrance hds5 problems
We just got our new z520 and have a HDS8 and HDS5...hope we dont have any problems out of them, but lowrance seems to have great customer service
Re: lowrance hds5 problems
They cannot fix my units from 06. This doesn't surprise me at all. Everyone knows the name Linda Colt for a reason. You hear it so often, "I talked to Linda about my problem" or " Linda sent me a new unit". I'm not putting her down at all, but if it wasn't for her.. Lowrance would really stink!! Good Luck.. I really hope they can fix everyones problems.
Re: lowrance hds5 problems
I recently purchased a lowrance hds5 and have a few problems with it. when you switch the screen from depth to gps it works fine, but when you switch it from gps to depth the screen with come up and then switch off and say it is loading. then it will go back to the gps screen and you have to do this several times for the depth finder screen to come up and stay up. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem or if I just have something set to where it is unable to show the depthfinder?
I had to write the president of the company to get waranty parts for my unit. Took 2 and a half months to get customer service to keep their word. After the final letter to the pres. they sent me a refund because I had to go buy cables because they would not honor waranty. 45 minute wait on customer service line and very frustrating to deal with them. I think I am going to become a Humminbird man after dealing with Lowrance. They actually responded in writing asking me if honoring their waranty was satisfactory to me??????
Re: lowrance hds5 problems
My new hds5 worked 1 day, then the GPS map would frequently freeze for an hour or 2, before it would update my location. I sent in the head unit for repair, and they sent me another brand new unit in the box complete with another transducer, cables, etc, within a couple of weeks, from the date I mailed it.
I haven't tried the replacement out yet, and I haven't been in the rain with it yet. I did have a 522c unit that quit the 1st time out in the rain though.
I've seen numerous water intrusion issues from others. You will want to make sure to fish in a driving rainstorm a few times to make sure it's water tight before the warranty expires.
