Fished the Missouri
Fished the Missouri River today in Montana....WOW. The mountains are beautiful, but the fish were not so friendly. Fly fished my butt off, but apparently I stink at it...so what did I do...I told the guide I brought a spin caster and I put a super duper on the line and BAM...fish on. The guide was appalled, but after my third fish he asked me where I got that little lure.
Wet waded the whole day and never was cold. Water temp was 62 and the air temp was 90...but I never broke a sweat because it was 30% humidity. Great day.
Still think the CR is the best river to fish for trout ever.
Going to a blue ribbon trout stream tomorrow in Lewistown and hope I have better luck.

Re: Fished the Missouri
Way to go! Don't worry about the fly fishing thing, it's an acquired skill! :D That's hilarious that the guide was appalled by your super duper, and even funnier that he had never seen one before. Guides up in that region are die hard fly fisherman, doesn't suprise me that he snubbed his nose at your hardware.
Good luck tomorrow on the other stream. I would have to agree that the CR is pretty sweet, although she is going through some rough times right now.:( She'll make it through it though.
I would have to say that the best trout river I have ever fished is the Green River in Wyoming, by far.

Re: Fished the Missouri
When I was in the service our platoon sarg heard three of us talking about fishing. So he made us a deal.He would after our first 8 weeks of basic take us to a great trout stream, of course all of us needed to foot the bill, and I wound up driving. These were were mostly native brook trout, so we got some of our tackle mailed to us,and away we went. the method he suggested was a small dark wet fly, under a bubble float. As we were shopping for these things at thePX I notixced they sold red worms, bought two containers. That small wet fly worked like dynomite, tipped with a worm. We finally showed him our secrt aftwer a couple of hours. We were just below the timber line, it was a great place. We made one more trip before we went to germany. While looking at field maps, we discovered there was an officers trout stream on the training area, yep, worms worked there also.Wonder what would have happened if we got caught.

Re: Fished the Missouri
Had a chance to fish that part of the Missouri River myself a few years ago, while going to a military school, and you are right it was beautiful. We tried the power bait thing with only a few fish caught.
What part of Montana are you at?

Re: Fished the Missouri
Sorry for the delay in responding...but e-mail reception was a no go for the past 6 days!
I fished Big Spring Creek (Lewistown) and the Missiouri (Craig just below Holdon dam) with about the same luck (3 fish), although in the Big Spring I caught a huge brown trout! It ran line off the rod and it fought like nothing I'd caught before, so it made my trip. Ran into to a local who said the fishing up there is about over until it turn cold.
The Missiouri is FULL of vegatation. Anything you threw whether a fly or a lure was coming back with cabbage on it...pretty frustrating and it taught me to appreciate the CR...the vegatation we have is nothing compared to their's!
I wasn't there for fishing, but I found the time to do it anyway...the only thing I didn't get to do that I wanted to was pike/walleye fish in the resevior close to Lewistown. I ran short on time and the schedule was too tight.
Mountain lions and bears were something they said I needed to be aware of while fishing Big Spring, which was a little concerning, but other than that I enjoyed my trip and time in Montana. Don't think I could live there...I love KY.
Fall fishing is around the corner...I think our River will kick up again when the temps get cooler.
