What is a "Chub Minnow"_How to get them?
In Jim Durham's Sept 22 fishing report, he reported excellent results using "chubs" as striper bait. Would like to know more about Chubs.
What is a chub minnow? What size do they get to? Can they be purchased in the Lake Cumberland area? Are they difficult to keep alive, as compared to shad? How and where do you trap them?
I know, lots of questions:confused:.....can I get lots of answers?:)
Good Fishing to All,
Re: What is a "Chub Minnow"_How to get them?
Creek Chubs are what I think you are referring to.....they are in most creeks and I like to use them for croppie and bass....I don't stripper fish so don't know about that...I trap them with a legal size minnow trap but the biggest I get is maybe 3 to 4 inches which may not be big enough for what you are wanting them for.....they have a body about like a little bass but the fin on the back is a good bit different....there is a pic of the fish on this page,
that is if I got it pasted properly....if not you can find it at the dept of fish and wild life website.

The largest one I ever saw was about 6'-2" in length and weighed approximately 245 lbs :)

Should have known this was comming...Can it catch a stripper?
Re: What is a "Chub Minnow"_How to get them?
Catching strippers comes easy for a Chubminnow, so long as you use American Currency as a trailer.

I don't know where you could buy them but if you have a minnow trap and a creek someplace close to you, why don't you put a couple hands full of dry dog food in the trap and throw it in the creek for a couple days and give them a try the next time you go....I have kept them alive for a couple weeks here at the house....I have a 15 gallon tank that I put them in with a garden pump to oxygenate the water but I'm sure any tropical fish tank would do the same thing....I read at a website somewhere that they can grow to 11 or 12 inches but that they are normally much smaller than that....
For some reason or another the fellas on this board think that us fellas that like to use live bait are somewhat less deserving of respect than the rest.
Re: What is a "Chub Minnow"_How to get them?
Trapping them yourself is probably the best if you have access to creek.
I've used them for years, there great for bass & stripers. Shad will always get the nod in my boat but, chubs are way more durable!
Once upon a time there used to be an older fellow down off hwy 52 just east of celina that would trap and sell chubs. Milt is or was his name. I bought chubs off of him for years. Anybody know who I'm talkin about?
