idea on this fishes weight or girth???
kinda pissed i forgot to measure the girth on this one, but oh well. any body got an educated guess on what the girth is and a rough weight? its 21 inches long. my good scale got broke unfortunately and the junk one i have varies 1-1/2 lbs depending on where the needle stops.

Re: idea on this fishes weight or girth???
Embrey, really hard to say on girth, but I'm going to say 5 to 5-1/2 lbs. This fish looks an awful lot like the 21 inchers I pulled out of Patoka this Summer. They both weighed 5 lbs on the nose.

Since we're later in the year, I'm gonna think maybe yours is a little fatter than mine (though again, it's very hard to tell from a single photo), so I'll go even as much as 6lbs.

i agree with ya myself on all that, heres another close up

Re: idea on this fishes weight or girth???
My length to weight ruler calls a 21" Bass 5.7 lbs. I have no idea of the girth. I found this formula on the net.
The Formula:
Bass weight = (length x length x girth) / 1,200. Get some math major to turn the formula around and you should be able to calculate the girth.
Hope this helps
Re: idea on this fishes weight or girth???
Embrey, that fish has a bit of a hollow in its belly, so I'm going to go somewhere between 5 and 5-1/2. Anything else would be pure speculation. Great fish though. I bet it fought like taking food from a pig.
Re: idea on this fishes weight or girth???
FishFeeder...I try to stay away from formulas, especially those involving girth, because girth is such an odd measurement to take. It has to be in exactly the same spot every time, and assumes all fish are proportioned exactly the same.
What I do is this: When I catch a fish that weighs EXACTLY a certain weight, like say, 5 pounds like the fish in my picture, I try to look at how it is proportioned. Is it belly heavy? Does it have big "shoulders?"
My 5 pounder is my "gold standard," so to speak. Since I know its length, 21" exactly, if I catch a fish of similar proportion, I take the ratio of their lengths, cube it, then multiply that times 5 pounds. I swear, it gets me within a half pound every time.
Re: idea on this fishes weight or girth???
well comparing your 5 and mine, it looks like mine is a little bigger by the pics, so i know my scale is junk now. it showed right at 4 lbs...lol. it showed a 20 inch i caught the day before at 3lbs. my old man said it was 6 as soon as i got it in the boat and hes got a 6 ,7,9, and a 10 on the wall, so i guess hes not off by far then after all... and yeah he fought...just glad i had my good pole in my hands. lost one about the same size the day before using a piss poor rod

When I saw the pic, I was thinking the weight you told me was small.........That fish looks to be pushing 6............I've got a couple 6's to compare with and I do think that is close to 6.
Later,
Geo

If by bigger, if you mean "fatter," you might be right. As always though, when I take photos of my fish, I have to remind people how big I am. Suffice it to say I am considerably bigger than most NFL linemen. Holding a 10-lb'er up to me would make it look small. And I usually don't take the typical "hold it up in front of the camera and make it look bigger" photo. That's why I measure the length, and take into account the condition of the fish...neither of those things are subject to photo distortion.
Re: idea on this fishes weight or girth???
NICE FISH - looks like it could make 6lbs - looks like a belly full of little gizzard shad too!
All were nice fish!
Re: idea on this fishes weight or girth???
