I would take them to the tail waters of Cumberland and let them throw small jerkbaits.

Good idea. Also believe it or not Bluegill are very active at Cumberland right now. I caught a good one on a Pop R last weekend and had sevral others hitting at it. After talking to a few people at the ramp and the Country store they said people targeting them had really been getting some nice Gills lately.
I don't normally see Gill fishing good there this time of year, but this year has just been weird all the way around so go figure. Even the Corp report mentions they are good right now. Wax worms and crickets under bobbers should get your young ones into some tasty blugill, Good luck.
Re: Somerset,taking kids fishing
I would enjoy fishing the tailwaters myself but would be a challenge for the kids as they would be a hazard to other people fishing the way they handle equipment.Bluegill fishing would work if I knew where to take them. Most of my fishing this time of the year is below the Greenup Dam for sauger and walleye.Got a good limit of sauger last night,no walleye.

I will be down that way myself trying to decide where to fish Cumberland or Dale. If you are set on shore fishing i would go behind the hatchery to the creek and let them catch some trout in the little stream. How many kids do you have with you? If i fish that morning i might be alone and have a 19ft center console and would be striper fishing. If i am alone you are more than welcome to go out with me. You can PM me and i can give you my phone number if i go there i might have the open seats.

Will be taking two kids, age 8 and 10.Striper fishing Cumberland sounds interesting as I have never done it,fish for stripers-hybrids in the Ohio river at times.Don't know where the hatchery is.

Best place for kids is on the hatchery creek that runs out of the Wolf Creek Hatchery right below the dam. Tons of trout in that small section of water. Worms, salmon eggs, power bait, small spinners....all will produce fish for the kids. Good luck!

I agree with Rich, the Hatchery is a great place for kids to fish. Also the ramp off of Ferry Rd. in Fishing Creek is really good for smallmouth and spots. Just fish with crappie minnows on the bottom or with a bobber and yall should have a blast.
Re: Somerset,taking kids fishing
I am liking the places closer to Somerset to cut down driving to the dam on a day which may be rainy.Have been to the ramp on Fishing Creek years ago, don't remember exactly where it is but can probably find it.Anyone in Somerset sell minnows?

There is the mapquest directions for Ferry Rd. Just follow it to the end and you'll run right down to the ramp. Had a lot of luck out there this time of year with 2-3 inches bait. Usually catch about 10-15 bass in just a couple hours. Generally a pound or two but I've caught several smallies over three pounds and had many more break off on the stucture around there. I actually sell suckers and creek chubs, if you're looking for some bait. Give me a call at 606-271-3127 or email me at "].
Re: Somerset,taking kids fishing
Sounds like a good deal may want to try a couple dozen chubs.Where are you located?I will be staying a couple miles up rt.39.

Near Lee's Ford, just a couple miles from the Ferry Rd ramp. I could just meet you over there if you wanted to.
