what for? I think it gives them character, clean your hands when your done fishing, you shure don't to put anything on them that will transfer to your baits JMO
You can clean the cork with steel wool. Just sand lightly and it will make them look like new. As far as making them waterproof, I have sealed them with clear stain before, but it adds weight, and makes them very slippery when they get wet.
Mr. Clean Magic Eraser
try using bleach on the cork, i read this in Bassmaster magazine. i use rod wrap on mine, so i never see it

I use rubbing alcohol. It works great.

Hydrogen peroxide does a good job and doesn't leave any residue or smell
On fly rods with premium cork handles. They recommend cleaning them with a mild soap and water. Then applying a thin coat of gun oil. Which protects and ages the cork nicely. (The smell? ) Ever hear of using WD-40 on your bait ???
The reel doctor used dish washing liquid on mine. I have used it too. Works fine. Dawn was the type.
Every year, I sand them lightly and re seal them with cork sealer which you can get from Net Craft or other rod making companies.
Thanks for the replies fellas....I think I'll try several of these and see which works best.
