jig fishing
I have had trouble keeping fish on a jig. I have the long distance release problem. I have been fishing a 7 ft med heavy rod with 15 lb test Ive even tried braid. I have thought about going to a heavy action rod but i seams like i loose allot of action due to the lose of tip action on the rod any suggestion would be greatly appreciated this prob is getting kinda old.

Re: jig fishing
Try sharpening your jig hooks and also snapping your wrist a little harder on the hookset.

Re: jig fishing
it also could be the way ur handling the fish as a bass surfaces jumping & mouth open they will come unbutton! at times it puts slack in the line. what i do as a bass surfaces i hold my rod downward and reel keeping my line tight :)

Re: jig fishing
It depends on the kind of hook you have in the jig also, there is a big difference in a casting hook and a flipping hook. The casting hook will be thinner wire making easier hook ups.

Re: jig fishing
It could also depend on what king of jig you're using. If you're making longer cast with the jig there's no sense in using a flipping jig. Flipping jigs have a heavy duty gauge hook which makes it harder to penetrate on a long cast. Flippin jigs are good for heavy cover and close quarters fishing. Try a smaller diameter hook like the Cumberland ProCaster jig.

Re: jig fishing
Agree with everything previously posted.
Use the flipping jigs for close quarters, and a casting jig for longer distances. The gauges of wire really do make a difference.;)

Re: jig fishing
Adjusting the type of jig you are using will probably help but it was tough for me to believe I wasn't setting the hook hard enough when I first started fishing the jig but I learned that was mostly what was causing my problem .... If you have been use to fishing a crank bait then getting a good hook set with a jig is totally different. ...with a crank bait or a spinner bait you just mostly tighten up on your line ...that won't work with a jig ...You have to "break his jaw" so to speak.

Re: jig fishing
i started setting the hook from the side instead of a upward motion. this has helped me out and like another said when the fish jumps point the rod down, i have even noticed somtimes when the fish jumps i will have half my rod in the water. and when you set the hook do a bill dance hook set just dont fall out of the boat :D
