serious question? about downscan.

I noticed that on the lowrance downscan, when it shows a stump or bush, or tree anything on the bottom. it show's it from the side. my way of thinking is, if the downscan is looking down at a tree. looks like it would show the top of the tree, not from the side. how does this work, does anyone know. or is my way of thinking twisted.:confused::confused:
