Where to Fish near Lexington?
Hi All-- Looks like my wife and I will be relocating to Lexington here within the next couple of months, and I was wondering if there are any good lakes nearby?
I'm used to having to drive/hike over an hour to a good fishing hole, so distance won't be too much of an issue.
I am coming from out west where all we really get is trout, so I am definitely looking forward to some warm-water fishing!
Thanks for the help!
Re: Where to Fish near Lexington?
I grew up close to Lexington. Herington is probably the closest lake to Lex but it can be tuff fishing. You can be on the water in 1.5-2hrs on Cumberland and it's great there. You also have Cave Run about the same distance East which is good for bass but has some HUGE Muskie in it. I used to wade Hickman creek with and ultra light set up and a Rooster Tail and catch 30-40 fish. The big ones from the creek are maybe 12 inches but their a blast on the light set up! Hope this helps and good luck.

Having that same issue myself. I'm fairly new to lexington, and i come to realize that a boat is in order to get good fish. I'll be going out and trying new lakes close to here. I'll post my results. Maybe that will help you. I dont have a boat, so all my fishing is from the bank. I'll be trying wilgren (taylor fork lake) this weekend. Its about 1/2 hour away. Hope i have some good news to share.

saugerdaddy- try Taylorsville below the Van Buren boat ramp and past the 248 bridge for fishing the banks.

There are several good places to fish Elkhorn creek in the Georgetown, Frankfort area. Alot of these places are a half hour or less. These are the areas I grew up fishing before I got a boat. Alot of them have some alot of fishing pressure but their is a reason for that. Switzer Covered Bridge, Cardome in G-town, Jim Beam factory are some really good starting places. Small Rebel Crawfish, Strike King Bitsy Tubes and small floating Rapalas will put you on fish. There are some big smallmouth in these waters.

Herrington is a great lake once you get the hang of things, pretty easy for bluegill, catch hybrids/whites at the jumps are a ball, and trolling for can pull some real lunkers up, a 6-10 pound hybrid can be a daily thing. As far as other lakes around I can't be much help, creek fishing in the summer is pretty fun too.

Don't forget Cedar Creek for bank fishing. I've seen guys catch four-pounders from the parking lot bank. Cedar Creek is abount an hour drive south of Lexington.
