Simple fishing techniques
Hello, I've been lurking here for a while but just reading and never commenting but I had a question for all the local KY people.
I'm at Ft Knox and my brother is coming into town and I was gonna take him for a day of fishing. I considered getting a guide but since he'll be here in a couple days, I figure it'd be hard to get one so I'm just gonna rent a bass boat here on post. In the past, I went with a few buddies and we just trolled around Nolin and Rough River with crankbaits and were able to just enjoy a day on the water. None of us were the greatest of fisherman and we rarely got to go there so it was just a safe way to get some fish and have fun.
Would that technique work now? Is there a special kind of fishing technique that would be more successful at this point? I'm essentially free to hit any of the lakes from Taylorsville down to Rough River and anything in that vicinity but we just want a good, enjoyable day on the water. Any ideas?
Re: Simple fishing techniques
Here are a couple of ideas. First, Otter Creek, right there on Ft. Knox, is getting stocked with trout either today or tomorrow. It might be crowded down there, though. Second, you're right that most guides will be booked, but, if you're considering a road trip, I'd call Dave Stewart. He probably is booked solid, but he might point you in the right direction of a KY Lake guide. Last, if you just want to get out, most state lakes rent boats. I've rented them on Guist Creek Lake in Shelbyville many times. It's a tough bass lake but you can catch the fire out of the panfish there, and when we have caught bass, it's quality.

If your already on knox otter creek is a good bet. Call hunt control and find out what army personel need to do to fish there, Nothing but sign in i'm certain. Stockers are dumb so you could catch them easily with panther martin's or any other little in-line spinner. No need for a fly rod. The base section probably won't be crowded I've only seen another fisherman there one time out of 5-6 visits, too many hoops for most of us civilian types. Or go with just about anything in any large impoundment. Many species are in some phase of the spawn right now and will hit anything. Good Luck!

You are very close to the Ohio river. Consider bank fishing there with night crawlers. An excellant bait shop toward L'ville on Dixie highway ask for where to go get some bait sinkers hooks etc. One place near the base was a little spot called Westpoint with good parking and lots of shoreline. Throw out a couple rods and hope for catfish and hybrids. Ask at the bait shop how the river is fishing now water level should be about right
