Louisville Area Fishing

Hello everyone! I live in Louisville and have fished here since I was a kid. However, I've gone a while without fishing much but have gotten back into lately. My main issue is that the spots where I used to fish get so much traffic now--like Long Run park and Guist Creek. I don't own a boat, unfortunately, because I don't have the space to store it. I usually fish for bluegill, bass, and catfish--whatever will hit a worm, fly, popeyed jig or the like.

I'm looking for some spots in the area to fish-say, within forty five minutes, where the fishing is pretty good from the bank. I'd prefer a spot without a whole lot of traffic, and I don't mind a walk through the woods or weeds if the spot is a little off the beaten path. I'd appreciate any help you all could give me--I really love fishing but have been really frustrated because I just don't have a good place to go! Thanks.

With fishing as popular as it is and teh population of jefferson county as high as it is... good luck finding someplace without traffic. I tend to just fish earlier to avoid people. Try McNealy down by the dam early early, and tom wallace lake early on the opposite side form the fishing pier. Charlie Vettiner Park also has somefishing ponds, but never been there personally.

Cool, thanks. What would you suggest I throw and with what kind of tackle? How deep?

I usually take a packet of white curly tail jigs and cast into the white water. Usually plenty of white bass to catch, as well as sauger. Topwaters can be good too at times for small largemouth and the occasional smallmouth. You just never know what you'll catch down there. Be prepared to wade through some water too - get a nice pair of watershoes (not flipflops or sandals) to walk around the in the ankle to knee deep water to access some spots. I like just standing in the water, especially on these hot summer days.

Miles Park is another place to try - would recommend going during the week since it gets a little busy on the weekend. One of the ponds gets stocked with trout. I've caught a few fish, no monsters. Great place to go and just goof off with some topwater frogs or weightless lizards...lots of pondweed in those ponds. There's 5 or 6 ponds all together, so it's kind of like a golf course for fishing.

Try Lake Jericho, 137 acres and pretty much walking access all around the lake. They keep the grass and weeds at a minimum and it has a play ground and pavilion area if you want to take the family. I.ve fish up there about 7 or 8 times this year and have caught several bass (2 to 3 lb.) range. Its close, exit 28 off of 71. I think its the next exit past LaGrange. Good luck! P.S. Boat traffic at a minimum because its idle speed only over the entire lake. The only recreational boats are canoes, no jet skis or skiers. They also rent boats.

Those lakes are all stocked, but this time of year, the fishing tends to be slow at best. Best way to avoid traffic is to go early, especially if you can get there on weekdays. They put rainbow trout in them in the spring and fall, and for a couple weeks afterward, it's easy to catch a limit, and IMHO those are REAL good eating!
