I am not sure about a 6 year old. The KBF has a good program with two age groups, 11-14 and 15-18. You can access all of the information on the KBF website.

I am the president of CAST Ministries. We just had a youth fishing derby at Mike Miller Park in Draffenville. Was a huge success. Check us out next year at http://castministries.net. I know that FOCAS out of Cadiz has one also every spring out of Barkley State Park. There address is http://focas-cadiz.org/.
Re: Youth fishing tournaments
Wilgreen lake in Richmond usually holds an annual youth fishing tournament. Last I heard it was going to be in the fall this year. You could call the marina for addtional details.

Re: Youth fishing tournaments
My son started fishing tournaments with me 2 years ago. He was 8. He is a member of the bass club. He does exceptionally well for a 10 year old. He will stand there & fish for 8 hours straight, weather they are biting or not. He will match me cast for cast & is a pretty darn good flipper now, with a spinning real that is. Aint got him started on the bait casters just yet, it wont be long though.
There are some clubs out there that will let him fish with you as your partner. I am in southern Indiana though. Not sure what the rules are with the KBF. He isn't a member of the federation, not old enough yet. I am sure that when he reaches that age he will be. I would say just ask around to some of the clubs near you & see what they say.

KBF and the KBFN both have really well run programs, where the kids compete with other kids adults are there only to drive the boat etc....

Embrey I guess that you don't realize that its way easier to learn new things the younger you are....ever heard the phrase "can't teach an old dog new tricks". :D Seriously, fishing with a 6 yr. old might be a little trying.....but well worth the future rewards!!!!

Seriously...I took him out when he was 3 and he was throwing a shad rap all day and never threw it up on the bank and has some natural skills....I'm thinking about buying the winnobega and being his coach/agent....lol
Youth is the future....
