This is a good read. Please folks, do not turn this in to a political argument, keep it civil.

I am NOT going to get political. BUT, I don't understand why getting political is a problem. This is a fishing forum and I understand that. However, is this not a political and fishing related topic? I don't understand that when Politics affects fishing or that when the two become intertwined such as this particular topic. Why shouldn't politics be discussed, it is afterall politics thats driving this topic to begin with. an earlier thread on this same topic was locked becuase of political discussions. I think that is obsurd. If the political discussion has nothing to do with fishing then fine its not appropriate. However in this case I feel politics is completely appropirate to discuss, especially when it directly affects and invovles fishing. you can't ignore the reality of the situation by locking a thread and closing off discussions, thats what this website is about...discussion..primarily of fishing but when politics gets involved as it clearly has here then it SHOULD be discussed.
I buy only non toxic sinkers but I have lots of lead weights that I still use.
However when I fish with my young nieces I only use the non-toxic stuff. I just don't want to expose them to lead if I can avoid it.
Im with him. This is a political topic and there is no way around that. With that said... maybe this thread should be located in the off topic section of the site.

I hope EVERY house they have ever visited, every hotel, motel they have ever stayed in, etc, etc, etc. EVERY TOY that they've purchased that may have been made in China has been thoroughly inspected.
The chances of Lead poisoning from the lead in fishing equipment is extremely.......EXTREMELY remote.
Old houses, hotels, toys, etc, etc have a significant risk factor. Houses with old paint, especially windows, where paint is "sanded off" by opening and closing the windows is MUCH more a risk.
So......with your great concern for lead poisoning, I surely hope you're doing all you can by inspecting every dwelling they may ever visit.

Talking about this issue/discussing it here on this discussion forum isn't going to solve anything...it's only going to create more problems. If any of you want to actually "do something" productive, do as the article says!!

Sorry to make you mad Geo. I agree 100% with you on the Chinese stuff and there are tons of pollutants we're all exposed to everyday that are probably a bigger deal than lead sinkers.
I was just saying what I do - not if I think a law should be passed or not.

Just pointing out that there are more serious problems potential lead posioning than fishing equipment.
When my kids were young, it didn't dawn on me to limit their exposure to lead via fishing equipment. BUT after reading a few articles about lead paint, and the issues with windows, I made decisions about hotels, motels, my OWN house, etc, etc. AND I know they probably had toys from China made from lead.
I was just pointing out that the exposure you're worried about has a very small impact on overall exposure.

If that were the case...as far as discussing the topic doesn't solve anything, then why do we discuss anything? why does this board exist if discussing these things don't solve anything and only creates more problems? Discussing these issues allows those who have not decided one way or another to hear all sides of the topic and possibly allows them to align themselves either in support or in opposition of whatever the topic. Discussing these issues, even if politics is invovled does solve things! if someone wasn't sure before they read a thread where everythign was discussed and then after reading they opposed the ban and they wrote their congressmen and followed the directions to oppose the ban then the discussion just helped to solve an issue.

I believe what Tim_T is refering to is the "its all the dems fault or its all the repubs fault" type comments that derail these types of threads and take away from the important info.
Good comments by Geo. I agree with him. Hope that doesn't make him mad :p

See, Andrew.........we do agree on some things.
First let me say I'm NOT in favor of a federal ban. But you guys are completely missing the point. Nobody is even saying that people are in danger of lead poisoning due to lead from sinkers. It's BIRDS that are in danger. And for some species, especially in certain areas, the threat is well documented. Some biologists believe that up to 50% of common loons that die during breeding season die from lead poising, due to ingesting lead fishing weights.
