What do you think of Johnson Motors
I am looking at a boat with a 90 hp Johnson Motor. He repainted the cover which looks like crap and there is a chunk out of the skag. Motor started up ok and he told me he painted the cover in the sun and it bubbled. It looks like crap. To me this is a sign of other issues with the motor. He told me the compression is good and he insists we test it before I buy it. So what do you guys think of Johnson Outboards?
I can get the skag repaired and I probably will have my mechanic look at the lower unit to assure the threads aren't worn.
Re: What do you think of Johnson Motors
good as any made unless it's been abused and never maintained, water pump,de carb etc,do a compression test and take it and run,but you still never know with a used boat.a few months back i went to nolin on sat,ran like always, next sat. at barren i brought it home with the side of a piston broke off.most all tear up at some point if you use them.
Re: What do you think of Johnson Motors
the v4-90hp crossflow Johnson is a real workhorse of a motor. It utilizes the exact same block crank pistons rods bearings heads and lower unit as the 140hp v-4. So your getting a motor that is not being pushed anywhere near it's limits. So it depends on how it was cared for. But design wise this is a solid motor longlasting motor with plenty of parts available.

I,ve blown Mercs & Fichts up, but never had an issue with any Johnson engine I,ve had & am running a 92 model now that still purrs like a kitten & I don't baby them to death either. Bestluck I,ve had have been Johnsons.
Re: What do you think of Johnson Motors
I had a little Johnson 15 with electric start that I loved...used it every week for 12 years. It tore me up the day it finally blew and I still miss it. Have a force 120 now and have seen less of the river this year than the thirty before.
