batt charger recommended

I need to replace a Black&Decker, batt charger, with float charge, polarity safety, an offered 15/10/2/ amp option not sure i have ever used anything but the lowest setting. Seems letting mine get submerged may have doomed it. B4 I replace it wonder what you all have the most confidence in, I personally would never use anything higher than 10 amps on my batts, firm believer in slow an trickle but would like to get some advice on the models on today's market.
For about 50$ i can replace this one, which offered nice features.

Check out the Schumacher speed charge ship'n shore model SSC1500A this is a 15-10-2 amp smart charger around $50 at Walmart.

i traded my older ranger boat for newer ranger, one bank is burn out like to buy a ten amp or 15 amp charger. :)

I would look at Battery Tender chargers.

These are great chargers and two of these are less money that a good DualPro or equilivent. If one bank ever should go out just get another single bank. I ony have experience with 12 volt. I've been using them for about a year and had great success with them and have heard good reports on them. Just plug it in and whenever you come back you are ready. I haven't worried about frying a battery since. You can leave it on there all winter with no worry. They are not trickle chanrgrs but (maybe) float chargers. An electrical engineer neighbor told me about them. I assumed he knew more about it than I.

This one is water proof for mounting in your boat. I did not bother with in boat mounting.

1.25 amp

Use the cables that you mount/attach to your battery terminals. This allows you to just plug in the charger to that cable for easy connect and disconnect.

Don't get caught up in thinking that the higher the amp rating on a charger the better it is.
More likely (from my experience) the higher the amp rating the more likely it is to fry your battery.

I fooled with those Schumacher chargers that Walmart sells for years and fried a lot of batteries and would never leave it charging if I was not going to be around to unplug it within 24 hours. Best thing I ever did is run over my Schumacher with my boat trailer which forced me to do a little research.

I have that charger and it works pretty dang good. I also have an onboard guide 2 bank charger that also works good.

I have a Dual-Pro 3 bank system in my boat and replaced my Delco Voyagers after eight years just for the heck of it. They are still in use for other purpose at this time.
Peter I agree that Schumacher chargers had problems, but think about it they were not digital/computer controlled they releid sp. on user control. A 2/5/10 amp charger does not have the power to shock a deep cycle battery to clean the plates before going into a float mode. The Battery tender chargers are good for cars and bikes etc. but not overnight use that a boater may need.

I've been using the ship to shore model for about 5 yrs. now. Am very pleased with it and it is idiot proof so far as polarity goes. Not sure if mine is the same model number as you mentioned ,but a very reliable charger. A charger is only as good as it's connection to the battery. Seen to many people think their battery or chager is going bad when actually it was their connections. Not to say that thats the problem with your charger.

MinnKota MK 315. 3 bank 5 amps per bank. Can be had shipped to your door around $130.00 from Blackbear Sporting Goods. By far the best onboard charger I've ever had.

id go with a stay n charge and be done with it

From what I have read the Dual Pro is most definately a good charger. Very good and worth the added investment.

I read about shocking the plates in the manual of my most recent schumacher computer controlled model which by the way was so light it just did not add up. Charger ran the whole time even when in "rest" mode. The older Schumachers were "automatic" and supposed to cut off when the battery was fully charged then trickle charge or whatever.

The battery tender 5 amp will bring back a completely depleted deep cycle battery to full charge. The 1.25 amp models (frequently used for motorcycles and cars) will not. I have trolled continuously for 4 to 7 hours a day (hopefully it does not take me that long to catch a fish) and when I bought the Battery Tender five amp, like you , was worried that my battery would not be fully charged the next day. It has always been ready to go the next morning. You can't quick charge your battery in an hour or so with it but from what I know, which is not a lot, that is not good for a battery.

So far very impressed with using the 1.25 amp on my starting battery and the 5 amp on trolling motor battery. Won't really know the end results for a few years unless a battery burns up. If the Battery tenders don't pan out I'll fork out the added dollars for a Dual-pro.

I think the Battery Tenders have a ten year warranty--did not read it close.

In any event you have the right charger!
