What pig and jigs should I buy?
I have been targeting smallies for awhile now in some local creeks and have had some decent success, of course most guys can catch a fish in a stream that is 15 ft wide....:) I have been thinking about trying out some plastics for larger smallmouth and have read some articles about pig and jigs and how they are go to bait for some guys. Armed with this knowledge I head out to the local sporting goods store and find that there are tons of colors and sizes to choose from, so many that I sorta just gave up and went home empty handed to do some more research. I would like to catch some largemouth too, it just happens that I spend more time on the creeks after smallies. So I guess the million dollar questions for the pros on here are...
1. What are your top 2 colors?
2. What oz size should I get?
3. Trailers? Just something in crawdad?
thanks in advance
Bill

Black and blue is the go to color and craw trailers should match I suggest the paca craws from net bait.

Unless you are hitting some deep pools, 1/8 and 1/4 oz are going to be the best bet. Stick with natural crawfish colors for clear creeks. A little orange on the claws can be helpful at times. Check the colors of the crawdads in the creeks you target and go with those colors.

1. black and blue is a good choice but if i only had two i go with.
A) Green pumkin- clear to stained water
B) Brown - heavy stained to muddy
2. I would suggest a 3/8 and 1/2. since you are fishing a smaller bodys of water maybe a 1/4 and 3/8.
3. i just use green punkin on all my trailers. any trailer will work but i use the sr paca craw or reg paca craw.
4. use a sent or dip pinchers in a dye scent.
Re: What pig and jigs should I buy?
On Ky Lake, i do decent with a black and blue jig, however, I catch very few smallmouth on that color (almost none). I seem to do much better for smallmouth with more natural colors: Green Pumpkin, Browns, and a little orange never hurt. I also have found that a little chartruse can make a world of difference in targeting smallmouth.

For what it is worth Andrew We caught some nice bass @ rough thursday. and friday and they all had crawfish in them from 1 to 2 " long the fish was caught on sandy flats and points. thursday the water was scary calm and the fish was just eating it up for some reason.

BC Lures Jigs. Black&Blue with Black & Blue Zoom swimmin chunk, Summer Craw, Tennessee Orange Craw & Cumberland Craw with a Rootbeer Pepper Green swimmin chunk & the tails dyed chartreuseon all trailers at night. Smallies love them

In small streams, creeks etc use a shakey head and a Zoom spped craw, dip in chart or orange spike it. and have fun.

I use jigs all summer long. They are probably the most versatile bait available. You can almost use them anywhere/anytime.
