Had a helpless situation today.
Went to town today to get some things and encountered a situation in which I was helpless and frustrated in that I couldn't be of assistance.
A man had his car off the side of the road with his hood up and the engine compartment on fire. A few other vehicles had pulled over, but everyone was just standing around doing nothing. When I passed him, I was saddened in that I didn't have a fire extinguisher in my truck. The fire was small, but fed by something, and was growing larger.:( I knew I couldn't help him.
I didn't have a blanket or floor mat or anything that could assist him and lessen his damages.
So while I was shopping. I purchased two ABC fire extinguishers, one for each of my trucks, in case I ever encounter this situation again.
Who knows. The vehicle I save next time may be my own.
Re: Had a helpless situation today.
You are correct that you might need one yourself. As a volunteer with a rural fire department, we make several runs each year to autos that have caught on fire without warning. Almost always the fire spreads so fast that the auto is totalled. Just remember to check the guages on your extinguisher every once in a while to see that they have not lost their charge because when that happens they are useless. I would also suggest having fire extinguishers on farm tractors also. Just remember that fires start small and it normally doesn't take much to put out a small fire.
Re: Had a helpless situation today.
I have fire extinguishers on each level of my home and one in the garage and another in the "boat barn". Duh, I forgot about placing them in my vehicles.
Several years ago my neighbor's small lawn lawn tractor caught on fire while he was working on it. My son ran and grabbed the extinguisher from our garage and put it out. That was a 100 yard dash each way. Neighbor never even offered to replace my extinguisher.:(

Dang whats up with that? I know they don't cost much but jeez a little gratitude would be nice.
We sell and service FE and do keep them in our vehicles but like you I don't have one in my personal truck...I will from now on. The house is covered already. Thanks!
Re: Had a helpless situation today.
I'm covered in the house, but don't have one in the truck...
I'll put one in the truck in case someone else is in need, but if my truck catches fire, I'll wait 10 minutes, then call the fire department. Burn that sucker to the ground - I've got GAP insurance to cover the difference between what I owe and what it's worth. LMAO With fuel prices like they are, I'll gladly see that loan terminated....cheaper payment on something that gets better than 15 in the city!
;)
