Maine Fishing Trip
Returned a few days ago from 7 days of hitting Ponds in Maine. We fished for largemouth, smallmouth and even caught a few Brook Trout in the process. It was fantastic! Got my biggest smally (5lbs) on a Sammy and my best day was 50 smallmouth most of which were on tubes.
The largemouth fishing was awesome as well! We had alot of rain and cloudy skies but the hundreds of bass that we caught made it tolerable.
Gas costs were outrageous!! We towed a 16 ft boat with a 5hp on it behind a full sized dodge ext cab and it cost us $935.75 in gas. Having your own boat is the only way to go on a trip like this. After splitting the cost of gas and considering we stayed with family the trip was actually cheap.
I thought it was pretty cool to sit back and decide what we wanted to catch and then pick a pond that has that bass type in it. Next year I will be sporting a flyrod and go after some of the trout in these ponds and Brooks.

Yikes. Thank goodness lodging costs were minimal. Sounds like you had a great trip. Where's the green with envy emoticon?

The pace of life is much slower up there. The trip was a breath of fresh mountain air and my buddy has an awesome house built on a wooded lot on the side of a mountain.
Sitting on the front porch while it was raining after an awesome day of fishing shooting the breeze and laughing with good friends...... just soaking in the moments was what I needed more than anything.:):):)

That sounds wonderful but I would add a nice glass of good bourbon to the equation.

Don, I have never visited Maine, but the pictures I have seen of the country looks awesome. I have a cousin who is a school teacher in Maine and she is constantly posting photos on her facebook page. I would love to get up there.
How big were the brookies you guys were getting.

Tim,
The first one was about 12" caught on a 5/16 D&L Jig....which really surprised me.
The second was about 14" and caught on a Sammy. The water was running really fast around an outflow from the lake to create a brook and we were on the lake side. I had just caught a smallie on the sammy and the next cast was the brookie. The very next cast was another smallie.
We could see the trout hitting at bugs on many different Ponds throughout our trip. I think a man could be in heaven up there with a fly rod.:)

Re: Maine Fishing Trip
Awesome Don, I'm glad you had a good time. I wish I could go somewhere that has fish.

Re: Maine Fishing Trip
Sounds like a great trip! If you want to try out a fly rod, I have one you can borrow. Probably can dig up a few old bass bugs and other flies you can try too.

Andrew,
I'm all for that man. Lets get a trip in and try that. I'll bring stats, bandaids and antibiotic lotion so I can remove hooks and take care of wounds since I'm thinking I'll hook myself a few times.:p

Re: Maine Fishing Trip
Very cool Don, you obviously have your priorities straight.
Worked a project up in NY with a Mainiac some years ago. He was a good guy except he talked funny. Me and him went to quite a few bahs.
