How long should you trust a spool of old line? The line is one year old and has never been exposed to the sun. the line feels strong when pulled on at 14pd test I cannot break it with my bare hands

I would go ahead and use it....especially if just out fishing for the fun of it. Now If it were a tournament.....go ahead and take the time to change it out. You can save a lot of line by just changing the first 60 -70 yards or so and leaving a "backing" that permanently stays on the spool. Just tie the 2 lines together. hope this helps
I change mine every year. However if it has never been used or out in the sun I would say it is just fine.
One thing you can do is tie an overhand knot in it and pull steadily. If it breaks too easy, get rid of it. The backing idea is good too.
I don't trust line at all! I change my numerous times during the summer...anytime I see the clearness go out of it, I change it immediately. I figure...if any doubt, change it now, then you won't be crying when the fish of your life snaps you off! ;)

I agree. I don't like it when I cry. Keep your line fresh. IMO.
