I'm now on the dole
Received my first Social Security check last month so I guess I am now one of the many receiving "Government Assistance".
However, let me explain things further. If I personally would have been in charge of the social security taxes taken from me and my employers over the years and had gotten any decent rate of return, planning on my own retirement...well let me put this into perspective. I have to live another 43 years from age 62 to even break even. I don't think I'm going to come out ahead on this ponzi scheme entitled "Social Security".

Re: I'm now on the dole
It's sad huh? I guess we are not supposed to judge our great leaders for these broke social programs. We should just trust all the bogus new ones like healthcare and stimulus plans??? Geez these guys/gals drive me nuts!
I hope I am fortunate enough to get some of what I paid in.
Glad your getting some of it !!

Lol :). Congratulations. I will never see one single cent of mine.
I don't know your work history but if you figure it up you would probably be a millionaire right now. Hope you live long enough to recoup every single nickel of your money.

Congrats! Having lived and worked in the greatest generation, and taking an early buy out, I've far over spent my contributions. Please dont even hint at a refund.

Congratulations on your retirement Tyme...GREAT news! I thought you had already been retired for awhile though, hadn't you? Maybe you have been but are just now drawing from social security?
I agree with Don...I turn 50 in December and according to the government/folks at social security I'm supposed to work until I'm 67 and a few months before I can draw the "full amount". I look around the work place, I look around at others who are still working and there aren't that many workers out there who are 67 years old and still working in a stressful job...most are semi-retired it seems, working at Walmart to supplement their social security.
These days right now ARE the good ol' days! It don't get much better than today.
