everything old is new again

have you ever heard this old saying, every thing old is new again. man I remember when most everyone driving would use the right lane, for slow driving, and use the left lane for passing only. and after passing another car they would get back over in the right lane. but not anymore, try to go somewere and leave early, you will still most likely be late. why? because some folks driving slow in the passing lane, with traffic lined up behind them, or driving in the left lane right beside a car in the right lane. and not passing or slowing down and getting behind the slow driver in the right lane. it's dangerous to pass on the right side of a car driving slow in the left lane. but I see a lot of drivers doing it anymore, because so many drivers have forgotten what the left lanes are for. there are a few signs on the road that say keep right except to pass. traffic would move alone so much better, if everyone would try to do just that. please don't camp out in the left lane, move over and let the traffic flow. I can't wait for the driving habits of the old days to become new again. KEEP RIGHT EXCEPT TO PASS. just curious, does slow drivers in the left lane, bother anyone else.

Please don't GRIPE at me because I'm doing 70 in a 60 and I'm in the FAR left lane, and you want to do 90.

I generally try to be mindful of the rules of the road, but in this day and age, when everyone is in a hurry.......MUCH bigger than me, they get bent because I'm DOING what the left lane is for. Passing.

Now, if I'm passing 10 -20 cars going 65 (still I'm going 70), that is STILL passing. Don't get bent because you want to go 90....slow down and smell the coffee......better yet, save some of that hard earned money.

AND in serious traffic, like what I experienced this morning, I'm going to CAMP in the left lane. Better than fighting all the idiots trying to merge last second or jump in front last second because they are in a hurry.

I see it all the time. For the most part I have become numb to it. Travel New Circle road in lexington several times a day and you have to become numb to it or you will blow a gasket.
Two lanes that easily should be three going one way with exits and merges all over the place. It can drive you to drink.

Since it is against the law to drive in the left lane if you are not passing, I wonder how many tickets are written for it. If speed limit signs must be obeyed or Roscoe P Coltrain will chase you down then why do "Keep Right Except To Pass" signs get to be ignored. OMG, I experienced some of it all today....except the last line that Tim_T wrote. lol

I rolled out of bed a few minutes past 4:00 this morning, brushed my teeth & dressed, grabbed a cuppa' joe and hit the road going to Hattiesburg, MS. When I hit I-59, every slow moving vehicle in the state was in the left lane driving 40 mph. There are signs along the road that say, "70 mph Maximum Speed -- 40 mph Minimum Speed." Nothing was mentioned about slow moving vehicles keeping to the right lane and those dummies couldn't figure it out for themselves. There were lots of 18-wheel trucks from the oil fields, some tankers and some hauling oil well equipment, and the drivers were going nuts. Jeeze! Traffic was bumper to bumper and long lines of cars were trying to merge into traffic. It was a white knuckle time for sure.

The drivers of the slow moving vehicles were not blue haired; they were idiots text messaging or talking on cell phones as if they were the only drivers on the road. It's those kinds of drivers that bring out the road rage.

Yes this is one of my pet peeves. Slow drivers on the left hand lane that are driving slower than the right hand lane or wont get over when you get behind them needing to pass. We have signs up here on the highways that state that the left lane is for passing, slower traffic stay to the right. I like that rule. Then everyone is happy.Also we have a new law in effect that police are ticketing anyone caught talking or texting on cellphones. Automatic starting fine of $500 for first offence. The police are really on this. I have noticed a considerable improvement. Anyone who wants to talk or text needs to pull over and do it. God I love laws that are common sense. Just too many accidents when people talk and text. Hope this greatly reduces the needless injuries and deaths.:) Do you folks have this law down there?

If people would just PICK A SPEED and drive it, I could cope. It's the freaking morons that speed up, slow down, speed up, slow down that drive me crazy.

If the speed limit is 70 and you want to drive 65, no trouble from me...just park your ass in the right lane and maintain 65. If you happen to come up on somebody going slower than you, signal left, check mirrors, check over shoulder, change to the left lane when clear...[B]pass the vehicle[/B]...immediately signal right, check mirrors, check over shoulder, change lanes back to the right. If you maintain your 65 speed this should be accomplished based on simple physics. Also, by doing this, if I choose to drive 80 in the left lane I can do so with minimal interruption.

I don't care how slow or fast you want to drive, just reserve the left lane for the faster of the two at any given moment. Don't camp over there. In Geo's example, I don't consider that camping....he's passing a line of cars, which means he's the faster of the two at that given time. I've got no problem with that at all.

The only exception that I see is to (1) move over into the left lane for an emergency vehicle or stranded motorist who is on the right shoulder (courtesy)....or (2) move over into the left lane when you are passing an on-ramp full of merging vehicles to help prevent an accident/bottleneck. Common courtesy, as in most areas of public existence, would handle a lot of problems. Contrary to popular belief, the world doesn't revolve around you.



Also, on Southbound I-75, there should be an ejection platform on the Ohio River Bridge that automatically sends all vehicles with Ohio license plates on to a ramp that directs them back North. On Northbound I-75, at the KY/TN border, there should be a detour that directs all vehicles with Ohio license plates to Cincinnati via North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia. Both spots, along with all drivers who text/email while driving, should be patrolled and enforced via the coordinated efforts of military vehicles with bazookas on the top and attack helicopters....no warning citations, just a fireworks show.

I totally agree, Splitshot. I HATE being passed on the right, and it amazes me how some people seem to prefer doing that. Now, if someone's on the Gene Snyder doing 65 in the fast lane, and the right lane is clear, no traffic, no exits coming up, I'll sit behind them only so long, giving them a chance to do the right thing and move over, perhaps even encouraging them with a flash of the headlights, but eventually I'm going to do it. And one thing I've noticed is that when I look over at them while I'm passing there's a good chance I'll see a cell phone pasted to their ear. BUT if I'm sitting in the fast lane doing my usual 75, and maybe I forgot and didn't move over when the right lane cleared, and some fool comes up behind me doing 90, I'm moving over if I can. One time the guy behind me was just flying up the right lane, must have been going close to 100, and I moved over as soon as I saw him (he was still well behind me), and when he passed me he gave me the finger! People just don't realize how dangerous passing on the right can be. On the Autobahn, most of which has no speed limits, passing on the right will get you a BIG fine!

You ought see the traffic patterns and driving habits on 31W between Etown and Fort Knox now that the big city drivers have gotten here that work in the new DA Human Resources Center. I feel like I'm back in Wash, DC or on the Baltimore Beltway again. Full contact, combat driving at its best.

Most of these guys swap lanes faster than I do thought patterns. Cutting in within inches of your front or back bumper is normal for them. I guess they figure if it doesn't take off the first layer of paint, it isn't considered close.

I do have to admit I get to work now far more awake than I used to. Driving to work now is an adventure.

Does this mean I'm going to have to start wearing the shorty shorts when playing basketball now?

Talking about all this driving is one thing that makes me glad to be from small town USA

Did one of us "drop the ball?" (pun intended). I can't connect what wearing shorty shorts has to do with driving in heavy traffic.

It doesn't matter about being from a small town. Sooner or later even a country boy has to go to the big city. I'm now from a small town but it's just recently. I still have to travel a lot and sometimes big cities get in my way. It's so crazy even my GPS gets confused.
