I know how to tie it....only one problem. I can't get the different kinds of drop shot weights I have tried to work like they are supposed to. I cant get the line to hold by just sliding it through the "slot" and pulling it snug. It always cuts my 8lb flouro when I try. I end up tying it on the weight. What am I doing wrong?
I usually just tie it also. Had the same problem. Also try different style weights,like the bell sinkers with the round eye tie they work well, also you can just get some big split shots and use them. The drop shot has been deadley for me this year, I have caught a lot on it, but I have been using it more so as to learn it. Very effective, caught over 25 bass on it yesterday on Barren, no real big uns but all fun.
I'm not sure just what the proper rigging is for drop shot but I have caught a boat load of croppie with it this summer... All I do is tie the hook with a palomar knot with however long a drop I want on it and just squeeze a split shot on the drop line... I'm sure there is a prescribed rig for the system but don't know what it is supposed to do except keep the bait a foot or so off the bottom... A fellow told me I needed to tie an additional length of line to the rig above the sinker so as to give the bait some free line but all that seemed to do was stay tangled most of the time... Bass rigging probably requires more than what I do but it is deadly on summertime croppie.
I just use splitshot. If you hang it up, the shot just slides off and that is all you lose.
I will try the split shot. Line twist would be the reason why some would say split shot is not good, but I will try for myself.
Funny, so far nobody saying they use the drop shot weight attachment the way they are intended to be used (when I say intended I mean articles by "experts".).
Thanks for the replies, and if anyone knows the "triick" please let me know. Until then I will play with the split shot and keep tying on the drop shot weight. It is definitey a good way to catch fish.
There is a new hook out that is made for drop-shotting. I did not see it on Bass Pro website so I don't know where it is available. It is supposed to help eliminate line twist.

Saw that. I think it is from VMC, a swivel hook. Pretty cool.

I use the drop shot weight, just don't pull your line to hard. As for line twist, when you reel your lure in reel it slow. The faster you reel the line will twist. I really don't like to use a swivel either because of to many knots.
I use the dropshot weight..what i do is slide my line through the sinker and get it set,then i tie a very small not at the end of the line that the weight is on and it dont pull off near as easy and when it does break it just breaks right at the very end where the small knot is at and also has less line stress..
My 2 cents might not be worth 2 cents but thought i would tell you how it works for me.
That's strange. I use 10 lb flouro on my drop shot (finesse right? LOL). 10 lb Seaguar's Invisx don't break and holds the weight fine. Line twist is my big problem. Usually after a tournament, I have to tie a swivel on the end, hook it to a hook on my light pole, walk all the line out, then give it a good pull and real it up tight, line twist leaves only to return the next time I fish it. LOL
to get line twist out; cut everything off your line and put your boat in gear and at an idle put the line in the water and let out most of the line, run it for a while then reel it in as the boat is still idleing forward or you can stop the boat and reel in the line.
