Sauger fishing at Meldah Dam
Any reports on the sauger fishing from a boat at the dam. The river access for shore fishing on the Kentucky side is nice but it doesn't get you close enough to the dam for the prime sauger fishing. Any infro about the fishing from Markland or Meldah dam is appreciated.
Re: Sauger fishing at Meldah Dam
Hey wags, I noticed you inquiring about the sauger fishing in the ohio river with very little or no reply. As my name sake... I am also on a hunt for the elusive sauger. If you google (ohio river fishing forum) you will find some pretty good talk about the fishing in the ohio river, especially the various dams on the river throughout the ohio. I often search both sites for info on sauger. Im from Ohio, but now live in Kentucky. Sauger dont seem to be as popular here as it is up north, and there are:cool: very few posts on walleyes or saugers on this site. The Markland, and McAlpine dams both have pretty good shore access right up to the dams, but both dams are in Indiana (on the ohio river) and both dams have the best access from the indians side. The saugers are picking up right now, with several being caught recently. Waterweather.com will give you pretty good river info ad far as water levels, and temps. Seems like if you can get to the river on a cloudy day (or evening) when the water level is in the 20-25ft range and 40° or less, you will hook up with a mess of fish. Good luck, and maybe I'll see you on the river one day.
Re: Sauger fishing at Meldah Dam
At Markland dam on the Indiana side go down the steps and go 100 yards downstream. There is a smooth section of beach that hold sauger. Take plenty of jigs and grubs as you will lose several. Kentucky fishing license are good on the main river below Markland.
