Need a Fly Fishing Mentor
I usually fish for bass with a baitcaster, but I really want to get into fly fishing. I would like to fish for LM, SM, and panfish in the Northern KY area. I live in Alexandria, KY. If you are in the area, and would be interested in teaching a new guy, please let me know. I haven't even bought any gear yet, since I have no idea what I'm doing. Any help would be appreciated.
Re: Need a Fly Fishing Mentor
Your in luck, there is a fly fishing club in NKY they have a web site, I think their called The Northern Kentucky Fly Fisherman. If you google that you should find it. Im sure they could point you in the right direction. Me, I went to bass pro shops and told the fly guy what i was wanting to do, he set be up with a rod, flys and some good pointers, I then went to the pond in front of old Lakeside Nursing Home and caught a 3-4 lb Carp on my 3rd cast. I was hooked from there on. Now I always have the fly rod with me (lakes, ponds, rivers, creeks) Im kinda taught myself( with the help of KY Afield videos), PM me if you have any questions.
Re: Need a Fly Fishing Mentor
Yeah, I emailed them from the "contact us" link on their web site about 8 months ago....never got a reply. If you fish at lakeside, you must be local. We should get together and do some fishing. I have a boat, and am trying to learn anything I can. Been bass fishing hard for the past year and a half or so, I have a lot to learn....
Re: Need a Fly Fishing Mentor
I am also in NKY. If you want to do some fishing we can get together. Happy to share some basic knowledge.

Thanks Colonel....I need to get some gear first, but I will probably take you up on that once I do.
Re: Need a Fly Fishing Mentor
Tweek, if you fish with Colonel Meyer and his brother Deadrift 84, be prepared to hear the virutes of the soft hackle fly! :) (Sorry Nate, couldn't be helped). On the flips side, his brother ties a fine deer hair popper.
Re: Need a Fly Fishing Mentor
When you're ready let me know and we'll get to it. Probably best to PM me during the winter as my posting goes down quite a bit until spring. If soft hackle flies weren't so versatile and effective, not to mention that I have caught the biggest trout I have ever caught (What can I say they where bustin' those little mayflies up in the surface film, what was I to do? Not catch em'?) on soft hackle flies, maybe I wouldn't tell everyone who would listen how awesome they are! By the way when are we gonna go fishin' again pal?
Re: Need a Fly Fishing Mentor
It's getting close to time to hit the water again. Don't forget to get a hold of colonel and I. If you live in Alexandria we could start with a licking river smallmouth beat down.
Re: Need a Fly Fishing Mentor
I definitely want to do that, and I do live in Alexandria. Problem is, I haven't been able to get up to bass pro to purchase a fly rod. I don't have any gear yet.
