Anybody ever open up a Shimano Spirex?
I'm trying to clean and lube my reels and I can't find an obvious way to remove the nut on the main shaft without pulling that little pin and I can't move the pin. Does that pin actually pull out or does the shaft unscrew somehow? It's a 2500 Spirex with rear drag.
Re: Anybody ever open up a Shimano Spirex?
The pin on the main shaft doesn?t come out. To take the main shaft out you will have to remove the handle, next remove the side plate on the left side of the reel (there should be three screws holding on the plate). Once the plate is off you should see the gears and the main shaft running through the gears. The main shaft should be attached to an oscillating gear at the rear of the reel with a screw. Remove the screw and the oscillating slider retainer, the shaft should pull out after the rotor nut is loosened.
I would make sure that you have a schematic before you start. Once the main shaft is out, everything inside is loose and will come out. Been there and done that, it can be fun.

Thanks for the reply! I have removed the screws. There are 2 in the side of the plate and one in the top which holds a trim piece on the reel seat arm. I removed the handle when I started but I can't get the side plate to release. It sort of looks like there may be some screws that come down from the top but I can't create enough room to see very well. Is there some sort of snap clips that also work to hold the side plate on? I'm concerned that I'm going to break something if I use very much pressure to pry that side plate out.
Re: Anybody ever open up a Shimano Spirex?
You might have to take the trim plate off. It might slide off one way or another. I wouldn?t think that it should take much to get it off. It could be held on by a small screw on the right side or the bottom of the reel. I went and took a look at a Spirex that I have and it doesn?t have the trim plate on it. Take a look at the schematic, it should show how to take the plate off.
You might try and loosen the rotor nut as well. That might give you the room to remove the side plate.
Re: Anybody ever open up a Shimano Spirex?
I am redoing my rear drag Spirex 2000 today actually and had the same problem. The answer is there is a little clip on top of the Oscillating Slider (RD 3745) called the Oscillating Slider Retainer (RD 3746). Once you take that off it just pops right out. You can't really see the retainer as it blends in with the actually slider. Hope this helps!

Here is a link to the reel schematics. I am repairing a Spirex 2000RA if you need to look at the parts and see what I am talking about.

Well, I've finally gotten this thing back together (mostly) and have come to a conclusion about rear drag Shimano spinning reels. If you decide that you need to take one apart to clean it and service it, don't! Use it until you are dissatisfied with it's performance and then get something else. Up until I realized that I had somehow lost the oscillating drive gear, I thought I could glue the plastic pieces, that I broke, back together. I'll swear, getting that drag cap off is bad business.
having the same issue! please help
How did you remove that drag cap?? (drag programmer a, 9584)
