How did you celebrate MLK Day?
I went to work as usual, just like I've been doing for the past 33 years or so.
Couldn't help but notice how light the traffic was today, no mail, no school, no federal, state or county agencies open, banks, credit unions, etc...makes me wonder what the percentage of folks are who their paycheck from a government entity. It must be dang near 50% or more judging by the traffic flow I experienced today.
I believe I read somewhere how after 50 some years after his death there's still a large divide in our country...not looking AT ALL to start a racist thread here...but dag gone, with the traffic flow like I saw today, how come I can't get a piece of the holiday action? I'm starting to get kind of tired of supporting others while they do nothing.
Then I was wondering just how much the government would save if they eliminated this holiday in it's entirety...which made me think probably not much cause what would the typical government worker be doing on a Monday anyway...probably not much.

Guess it is your company's fault. I know a lot of people that aren't government workers who were of today. Why have Holidays at all would be a better question.

Banks and most Financial Institutions were closed today.......
Wall Street was closed...
I really don't understand it though.

I'm guessin' they're self employed? Not very many companies I know of who take this day off...at least not in the construction industry anyway.
Re: How did you celebrate MLK Day?
My neighbor works at a bank and my brother does heating and air and both were off.
edited to add: Sorry, just found out my brother took a vacation day so he could hang out with his girls.

Agree.....one could argue why have any holliday. Labor Day, since apparently no one in this country labors anymore they are all on the draw.
I for one kinda enjoy watching some of the memorials that take place and are covered on the news. I am old enough to remember a time when you never saw blacks and white eating in the same resturant. I also vividly remember those white only signs outside of the public pool. My father hired two black fellows he knew from Louisville and move them to MO to work for him. We recieved threats for bringing these two fellows into town. They ended up moving back to Louisville because no one would rent to them.
A lesson from history to be learned here. Learn from past mistakes.

I think Dr. King may have been the man that got the ball rolling.

Some people have more money than sense too.
Re: How did you celebrate MLK Day?
First off obamy is half black but what bothers me the most about black people, their special treatment, the white guilt and overall black attitude is this.
1) If you want to be treated as an equal by all races stop placing yourself in this victim mode.
2) Why do you denigrate eachother with this N word but it's fighting words if a white man says it? Again special treatment.
3) Slavery? How many generations ago has this happened?
4) MLK had a dream what has happened to it? Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Jeremiah wright? Do they know represent your cause? If so change courses.
5) NAACP, black panthers, Miss Black America, MLK day, black history month, bet and on and on. No other race has this special treatment so why should they?
Don't get me wrong I have dated, lived with, bunked with in the army, had best friends and family friends who were black. I'm just saying if you want to soar with eagles stop hanging with turkeys. Stop acting like poor me and raise yourself up and excel.
I never meet a person of any color without giving them an opportunity to be themselves and be treated as an equal. I have met and disliked people of all colors, age groups and genders. I have been a victim of racial discrimination so I speak from experience. I dealt with it and so did my family. We never received anything special for it? Why does anyone else?

Man couldn't agree more...
Good news is, since Omama is the POTUS..No other Holiday should be made up special just to celebrate something he couldn't do as the worst POTUS in the history of the Presidency.
Thank goodness he'll only be lumped into all the other Presidents whom we give credit to on President's Day. But now that this man will be added to the list of men whom will be celebrated. The Holiday just seems like it's lost it's appeal to me now, since this man has done such a terrible job as the POTUS, even worse than Jimmy (Peanut ) Carter did while in office.
Hate to say it, but looks like Romney will be the next Reagan in the line of men elected by a lanslide to defeat the current POTUS.
But in all due respect Ronald Reagan was one of the most liked and one of the only Presidents to have actually done a great job while in Office.....
