I would think that they are most likely chubs. Which you can use.

Thank you Tyme2fish. I looked it up and it says any fish that is not considered a game fish can be taken for bait as long as it's less than 6 inches long and there is a 500 fish limit.

Depending on the waters just be careful you don't catch any baby asian carp and transplant. :)

If you catch any fantail minnows they are the absolute best minnow for smallmouth. Freeline them off points, especially in the fall, and they will tear them to pieces. I read somewhere that fantail minnows prey on smallmouth beds and the smallies have a natural instinct to kill fantails on sight.

Although I'm pretty sure the asain "crap" haven't made it to the creeks I fish I promise to brutally smash any I catch with a rock!
