OK here's the heart of the matter right here, as I see it:
"San Joaquin County has had more than 30 tuberculosis prosecutions since 1984, prosecutor Stephen Taylor said, noting the county is more aggressive than other jurisdictions in prosecuting patients to get them to take their medication.
"The criminal cases we're dealing with generally involve drug users who are harder to treat and manage because the TB medicines conflict with street drugs," he said. "We have to throw these people in jail and treat them as in-patients. They don't cooperate as out-patients.""
As the saying goes, "Your right to swing your fist stops where my nose starts." In other words, if this guy wanted to refuse his TB drugs because they interfere with his meth and alcohol, and that was only a danger to himself, I'd say fine, let the guy kill himself as he sees fit. But when that refusal makes him a danger to the the community, to where he's in danger of communicating TB to somebody, I have no problem with throwing his sorry ass in jail.
