Picked up a few pieces of "trash" this weekend...
Well, some folks consider these "trash fish", but I think of them as prehistoric & golden goodness on the fly!!
Saturday was a tough day on the water. Since the lake has been down for a long time it's given enough time for the green vegetation to grow and grow everywhere... and now with the lake getting closer to summer pool it's giving the carp plenty of cover and plenty of stuff to munch on. Only had limited shots at them, but found some Gar laid up and suspended. Some of those dudes were a big as my leg, but the little guys kept getting in the way! Here's an example!
The deadly "rope fly" strikes again!

Today (Sunday) was a little better carp day, but mainly ran into laid up fish and some still spawning up in the green stuff!! You have to find pockets of mud where no weeds/grass have grown and that gives you a shot at either mudding fish or fish cruising looking for food. Found one that was hungry....

Tried some shots at fish feeding in the vegetation but would get hung up or land the fly right on top of them and they would spook out!
Re: Picked up a few pieces of "trash" this weekend...
I bet those guys put up some amazing fights! Glad to see somebody else appreciate the "trash" as much as I do. I'm about to take my son out carpin' for his first time this weekend. He doesn't even know what he's in for!
I've always wondered... If it puts up a good fight and you plan on releasing it regardless of what species it is then how can somebody call it trash? I'll bet both those fish fought harder than the average bass anybody on here catches.

I know some creeks that run into the Ohio River that have giant gar 6ft long in some cases. Been wanting to try and catch some I would love to know how to make the rope bait also.

Ive never seen any that big but I have for sure seen some pushing 5'

I've seen some huge gar in Nolin. I've never caught one, but I see them swim right by the boat at the surface. I'd say a few have been 5' long.

I've seen some gar that might set the new record today. Put in the Salt River in West Point and head up to the Ft Knox off limits signs . You will find monster gar.
