Jugging at Taylorsville
I thought I might try this with the kids one nite. I have several of the noodles and plenty of old jugs. I just haven't done this in years. Can anybody give me tips as far as techniques and areas. What about bait. I hear everyone talking about shad. Where and how do you catch them. I have a casting net just not sure where to catch the shad. Any tips will be appreciated.

I usually just put in at possum ridge and go over to the state dock marina no wake area and can catch shad pretty easy right before dark. If u r taking kids with u i would take some bluegill bait and let them catch some gills n use small ones as bait also.

I looked for shad the other nite with no luck. I have a casting net just need to practice Are there any certain spots or types of places I should set jugs?
-
To tell u the truth i only fish in one spot n have always had success in that one area so have never really tried to many other spots. If u r looking at the lake from possum ridge ramp, i go to the right about a couple hundred yards n try the creek channel and some of the flats. Like i said i have never gone back there n never caught fish so i just stick to it, lol. There r always a few boats back in there fishing to, so i take it is a good spot. Good luck! I usually have better success catching shad n july n august. sometimes all u will c is a single shad flick the surface and if u r close throw the net on it and sometimes u get lucky n catch a net full!

Thanks for the info. I am having trouble catching shad. Going to have to practice my casting net. Lol

Ive jugged fished once and trying to get started as well. Ive always heard people using shad & bluegill, but do live crawls work well?
-
well im no expert by any means myself, but i have only used shad or bluegills, n seems to me that the bigger cats like the bluegills alot of the time but for me i can catch a bunch of shad quickly so that is what i use a lot of times, good luck!

I'm having trouble finding big schools of shad. Is it just too early in the year? Anybody got any advice on casting nets for shad.

Fished out there this weekend with some Blue Herring. Caught several nice eating size cats and a few big perch drums. 1st time I have used Blue Herring, very pleased, they were tearing um up. I usually use shad or bluegill which works great too but seemed like I was getting bites a lot faster with the blue herring.
I go out their in the beginning of winter, after the first good freeze. Walk the banks and pick up enough dead shad to last all summer. This past winter me a buddy filled up six kroger bags of dead shad just from the possum ridge ramp and settlers trace ramp. Put um in the deep freeze.

Good idea. I will try that this winter. Where do you get blue herring?

Are the tailwaters below the dam any good for catching shad?

I wouldn't throw a net down there, snag city in that area.
