Need one more great deal
Okay, a couple weeks ago I posted I need a boat.. Well I found an almost unbelievable deal and purchased a Stratos 295 Pro Elite. Everything is awesome except the front depth finder doesn't work. I would like to get a side imaging unit or possibly a down imaging unit. If anyone has one they want they have been wanting to upgrade and sell please let me know. I really like the hummingbird 5 series ci si but am open to anything. I was told lowrance would fix it for 68 dollars but I am not much of a lowrance fan. You can IM me or txt me at 859-221-9585

Jabbo ... you really don't want a SI unit for the front of the boat, and a DI unit on the front also has its drawbacks. If you have another depthfinder to switch to the front, and put your SI or DI unit on the transom, you'd probably be more satisfied with that configuration. If you're going SI ... Humminbird seems to have the upper hand in that technology. If you go DI ... Lowrance has the better technology, as their units have a dedicated crystal for DI imaging (whereas Hbird units use the SI crystal & processes the DI image from it).

I dont know why you wouldnt want SI for the front of the boat. And Humminbird has the best technology thats why te majority of the pros are switching from Lowrance to Humminbird.

Mainly becasue your trolling motor is constantly moving from side to side and you're not going to get an accurate SI reading. And if your talking about pros from FLW switching from Humminbird to Lowrance that's mainly becasue FLW is aligned with Lowrance. Need to get your facts straight before you pop off....LOL

Most people who have DI on the front don't have it on their trolling motor.......they have shoot thru the hull, with the ducer up there.........

I have a HB si at the console and di at the trolling motor and i couldnt be any happier. I have no trouble with the di ducer being mounted on the trolling motor

I was hoping someone would post they they have DI up front on the trolling motor.
The SI is what really doesn't work too well on the trolling motor

My intent was to put the unit up front and the transducer in the back of the boat (I don't like them on the t/motor) I am usually on the front of the boat vs at the helm. I guess first things first though...I need someone to give me a good deal on one.. :D Once I get one.. I will be mre than happy to let everyone know how it works with the transducer in the rear and the unit up front..

check the electronics forum on bassboatcentral.com, some times there are good prices on used units from guys that are upgrading

Clarification .....
Yeah, guys ... that's why I mentioned not putting a SI on the TM -- movement of the TM skews the image. And I didn't say having DI on the TM was as bad, just that it had "issues" of its own. I know, because I have a Lowrance Elite 5DSI unit, and the transdx is on the trolling motor !!
Both SI & DI work better & show better images when you're moving along at a few mph. DI's transducer signal is more of a fan shape slice ... so it, too, is subject to skewed images when the TM isn't pointing straight ahead &/or when you have to make a course adjustment. I placed my DI on the bow/TM because I didn't want to be seeing what was under the boat SIXTEEN FEET BEHIND ME, that I'd already passed over ... LOL !!! Another reason was that I wanted the GPS (internal antenna) to be marking WHERE I WAS, right then ... and not 16ft away. In my case it was worth the skewed images (from TM movement), to have it on the TM. I have a in-dash Hbird 2d depthfinder w/transdx "thru hull" for when I'm running the big motor.
You also have to take into consideration the shape/size/angle of the signal from a DI unit ... so you'll know what portion of the water column/bottom you're actually looking at !! Check out these charts :

Trolling Motor Si Units
I completely disagree with the statement that SI units aren't good at the trolling motor. I have a 798 ci si on the trolling motor & a 581 I 2-D unit at the console. You can simply adjust scroll speed either up or down as needed & also adjust noise filter if your getting interference lines on the display. Also if your really busy turning the head of the troller a lot it will skew picture some, but the images still pop out at you. You can adjust scroll speed some to help with this. You can also turn troller head very slow to scout things out like shooting under docks & such. When I was buying an si unit I read many comments just like Crappy-Pappys( no harm meant towards you pappy) & almost put my unit at console, but after reading & looking at images on Bass Boat Central (www.bbcboards.net) & the unofficial humminbird forum I put my si unit on the trolling motor & really glad of it. Another thing with it being up front is when trying to fish an offshore waypoint you've marked with the si unit on trolling motor is you'll always be facing towards your waypoint. Si up front can also show you if a large school is just out of range of your cast as a big school can only be 10 or so feet out of your cast range & you'll know it with si up front. Di & Si both work extremely well up front after you get used to operating them. Way better than just at the console & honestly10 to 1 in my opinion. Why not have both where you fish most times ???
