Best Large Lake to Have a Lake Front Home on

I was asked the other day to recommend to a out of state friend what is the best lake in KY to have a lake front home on. He is interested in having a second home here in KY on a lake. His concerns were varied such as fishing, view, pleasure boating, nearby airports, etc. I ended up recommending Cumberland and Kentucky in that order. I gave Cumberland the edge because of a few factors. First was probably a central KY bias, second was the lack of barge traffic, third the fishing resurrection taking place and lastly the current lack of the Asian carp problem in Cumberland. I was curious to get feedback from others about my recommendations. Thanks.

ky.lake and barkley is hard to beat .most of time good fishing and always beautiful

Availability is key as well. I'm not sure how easy it is to obtain a lake front home on Cumberland, but there are always several available on the twin lakes.
I know this cause I look every time I'm down there (wishful looking I might add).

I've never seen an Asian carp on either of the lakes personally and I never pay any attention to barges.

Im central ky biased as well but I hear too many negative things about the southern part of the state. western ky has always been good to me and I certainly don't get down there enough.

I don't think Cumberland can compare to KY Lake but we all have our preferences. I really despise going to Cumberland in the summer mostly due to how crowded it can be. It's also hard to beat many of the towns in Western KY as compared to the Jamestown/Somerset area. If you are looking for housing "On" the lake Cumberland doesn't offer many options but there is housing nearby. I don't see barge traffic as a negative either. There are just so many places and options on KY and Barkley that it's hard to compare to any other lake nearby. The only downfall in your list of options is the proximity to airports but it's not exactly a short drive from Jamestown to Louisville so that's a wash too.

My girlfriend and I are looking for homes on a lake or lest close to one, we are going this week to look at a log cabin close to cumberland..with all the looking he better have money cause any nice house thats lake front are HIGH!!!!!!! We are looking at small places,,don`t take much to make us happy.....even been looking up north again,,,but i don`t have 200k or more for a 1000sf house tell him to look at a site called Lakefronthomes.com or something like that

I am looking at homes near or on a big bass fishing lake myself. I like KY/Barkley but when it comes to proximity to major airports AND major healthcare (not getting any younger) I have decided to look at Alabama. But if any of you all have better information on airport and hospital quality and locations near KY/Barkley I would be glad to hear it.

My house is not lakefront (i wouldnt have lakefront, i can hear the big boats day and night loud and clear as it is) but it is considered "lake oriented" . It is 3 story cape cod, 4500sq ft. Indoor boat storage, minutes from pleasant hill or jtown. Country rural setting, lots of deer and loaded with turkeys. If he buys my house im moving to florida ! We have construction approved land on big torch key that is calling our name, not sure if i can wait for retirement lol

Surely one could find several nice places with great fishing in Tenn.

Come on the KY River isn't big enough for you either? :rolleyes: Depending on where on KY or Barkley you want to locate, Vanderbilt is between an hour and a half and two and a half hours. That is a major concern for me also when I start looking in a couple of years.

Semi, it is big enough until we get a lot of rain, then it is too big :D
