George George You are not a scientist not close1
George your entire premise is false or off target. I suspect you tried to do that on purpose as you can't be that unaware of how the melting glaciers make the ocean levels rise. Ice does indeed float in water but it also sits on the land well out of the water. Only when the ice moves from the land to the water does it start to melt. When the Ice enter the water is raised the Ocean level at that time. It's the process of going from land to water that caused the ocean level to rise. Duh!
Ice is less DENSE that water. That's why if FLOATS. Water EXPANDS when it freezes making it larger and thus lighter.
When water melts is occupies less space.
Water that's on top of land does not displace water in the ocean or make the ocean deeper. In fact water that evaporates from the ocean rises into the atmosphere and lowers the level of the oceans. Just as water boiling in a tea pot evaporates and leave the water level in the tea pot lower.
These are solid scientific and physical facts that are not in dispute.
Water that falls on the mountain tops at the water vapor in the atmosphere condenses and collects into larger and larger aggregates of water molecules eventually falls at rain or snow. Snow accumulate on the top of the mountain and over time gravity pulls the ice down and the ice accumulate into a large mass called a Glacier. Glaciers hold a lot of water. Glaciers are sitting on top of the land and come glaciers cover a great portion of certain Continents such at the Antarctic Continent. The ice sitting on top of the land is not making the ocean level rise. In fact the ocean levels are lowered when the water in the ocean evaporates, falls as snow and gets stuck on land.
Now the opposite can happen if the global average temperature of the Earth rises just a few degrees. Remember that Ice freezes at 32 Deg F at Standard Pressure of 760 mm Hg. There is some energy required to change water from one form to another. Water vapor to liquid and from liquid to ice. So it takes a little bit more energy to melt the snow. Weather changes all the time. Heat energy is lost to space and moved around the earth due to the fact that the earth spins on it's axis and revolved around the sun. Gravity and other factors move the air around which move the heat around the earth. That's why real scientist deal with Global Temperatures not a single temp at some remote local. And they deal with long range average if all areas of the earth. Looking at the entire picture they found that the average global temperatures of the earth are rising not falling. And they have been rising for a long time now.
The ice is melting off the land slowly but surely and it's running back down into the ocean. Thus the ocean levels are rising.
Just the opposite of what you said. The ice is melting and it's filling up the oceans with more water and the sea levels will continue to rise if this keeps on. Contrary to what George Said below.
George, Put several ice cube above the water and let them melt and drip into a cup below. You will see the water level in the cup rising if all the melt water goes into the cup. Start with an empty pre weighted (tarred) cup and measure the weight of the cup and added melt water at the end. ENOUGH SAID!!! :p
[QUOTE=GeoFisher;533409]How does an ICEBURG, floating in the water melt and displace more water?? Basic science disproves that completely.
You can try this little experiment yourself. Put an ice cube in a glass of water. MARK the waterline. Come back an hour later, when the ice cube is melted............ENOUGH SAID.
PS: I won't debate you on the amount of rising ocean levels or when it will happen. We will both not be around long enough to find out the truth. By the time this happens your kid's kids may see the affects.

Yea, STILL not a scientist.......
Aw.......never mind..........simply not worth it.
