Heres some interesting info.....i love to fish for bedding bass......but i let them go asap after caught and have went back to nest later after i caught the bass and he/she was back on the nest...every time ! When fishing larger lakes i dont think {i dont do this} people keeping a few large bass affects the system very much but i had a freind that fished a 100 acre lake and kept bass i know of that weighed 7.5....at least 4 bass around 5 lb. Etc. Etc. Bad idea on a lake that small ! The largest bass in a lake produce the most eggs. After he did this for about 2 years and me telling him what i stated above he was crying the blues about not being able to catch the quality of bass he had in the past. All i said to him was..........i told ya ! Keep some bass to eat if you want to but nothing over 3 lbs..thats my 10 cents. Later jc. Oh by the way when i warned him about it he said {i pay for my fishing lic. And im going to get my moneys worth}
Hahaha...Yep that's true and i don't really have a problem with it because having a fishing license makes one legal to fish within the rules of the lake and or state. What it doesn't do is give people common sense, a sense of courtesy to others or the right to be an A-hole. They usually have those wonderful traits from the parents!:p
I used to fish Jacobson a lot back a few years ago. This was before they built the dike in the back that separated the park into two lakes. I loved it when they had the free fishing day event. They would stock the lake with Bass and catfish and they were roped off to stay in the back end of the lake. It was fun to go the next day or two after the masses left and I could wear those bass out walking the bank. Once they took the net down to let the fish scatter into the lake we would catch nice ones from our Jon Boat on the Golf course side of the lake.
The folks waiting to fish at the blast of the horn on the first day could limit out within minutes on catfish and the sad thing is...the first horn was so kids only can fish but man the so called adults couldn't follow that simple rule. I watched many adults cast and catch fish and have a kid sitting nearby so they could claim it their fish. Stringers were full and heavy with Bass and Catfish and that kind of stuff pisses me off. One year they had an official (game warden I believe) there and I talked with him and of course he was gonna give warnings and just have a presence he really wasn't there to bust anyone on breaking the rules.
If they policed it it would be an expensive venture for the city so I guess its just an event that will run its course. I don't fish over there anymore so I'm not sure if they have it or not anymore.
Don you and guys like you are the minority I'm afraid. I personally think their should be limits on tourneys held especially in the summer and yes many hate me saying that but thats how I feel. I mean are we trying to help the fisheries or are we trying to help Bubba be like Ike.
Come on MAN..............
Man I agree...to be honest I really didn't care to fish tournys in the heat of the summer...I became pretty good at caring for my fish with ice in bottles, additional aeration and chemicals that help with stress. I never lost a fish from negligence on my part. A tongue hooked or gut hooked bass may die but that can happen to anyone.
Back to the original thought....I have witnessed what can happen with loose lips and bass fishing hotspots or small creeks in general. I remember finding some great fish pre-fishing for a big open tourny back in West Lake Toho in Cental Florida. My PARTNER wanted so bad to tell his buddies (guides no less) about how we were going to clean up. He also told a few competitors about our (MY!!) section of the lake and the pattern and THEN went to check them twice before the tourny day. Man to say I was pissed was an understatement...we never fished another tourny together again. Still good friends but we fish for fun when I am down there.:o Ohh and we took 5th out of 150+ boats and my spot was dead but i had backup patterns that he never knew about. Live and learn.

Loose lips..................Sink Ships....always have, always will

The only reason I've fished it as much is I had surgery on my knee and can't get the boat out for a couple more months. I feel that if they are spending money to stock it 6 to 8 times a year the cost of a warden at least showing up every now and again shouldn't be nothing.

You do know the mortality rate of released stripers, right? Maybe we should put a season on striper fishing for those who don't understand the reason behind the daily limits. See how this works?

I agree but don't really know the figures. I would love to see one or even a Lexington Police Officer at these events that promote kids fishing since they are being used by adults to stock their freezer. The rule and lawbreaker will show up at every event, I understand that's just how it is but a blatant "who cares" attitude is wrong.
If someone wants to keep a legal fish it's up to them. I may not like it but I understand. I have a 9 pound largemouth mounted from 1993 so I have done it.

What's wrong with someone legally feeding their family? Oh, you don't like it. You know what I don't like? Social Networking.

I don't have a problem with it. We were raised eating fish we caught and game as well. As a kid legally didn't mean a lot to us because we were on our own around the lake or ponds fishing and swimming. Plus back then people really didn't practice a lot of catch and release.
Feeding your families with legally harvested fish or game is expected. If it's legal I don't have a problem with it at all. My choice is to not take anything home from freshwater fishing trips anymore but that's also my choice. Now if we are talking saltwater and I'm going after a specific fish, shrimp, scallop or crab for food then i WANT my limit!

I live less than a mile from Jacobson and drive past it usually twice a day. It gets hammered with the public, but that's what it is there for. I've seen a KDFWR Ford pickup there twice parked by the road in the last couple of weeks with a warden out checking people.
If you are within the law to keep a fish, more power to you. I won't say a word, whether I think it's a good idea or not. Like Don, I choose to catch and release everything freshwater, unless it's a planned crappie trip. It's your personal choice.
You want to see un-policed waters, go creek fishing. I've seen stringers full of illegal smallies...and though it's not my job, I'll call a guy out on it. Maybe they are ignorant of the law and will release them, or maybe they will tell me off. If it's the latter, I have no problem calling KDFWR and reporting it.
The reality is that with the thousands of miles of fishable shorelines in KY, there is no way that a handful of wardens can make a routine presence everywhere. They hit the high traffic areas. Be a steward of your sport and your fishery and help them out. You can tactfully go up to an angler and tell them they are breaking a law. Give them an opportunity to make it right. I did it once to a young guy on a creek with a rope stringer of short bass and he honest to God didn't know. The fella was a bit rough around the edges, just starting to fish, didn't sound like he had any kind of role models in his life that had taught him anything about fishing, and I think he was sincerely apologetic. He released them. We talked awhile. I ended up giving him a few tips on Texas Rigging tubes because he was fishing jig heads in the rocks and constantly getting hung up. Ignorance of the law is no excuse, and I don't tell the story to get an attaboy...I tell it as an example of where "it ain't my job to police the waters" would have been a missed opportunity to help someone out who just didn't know any better. Will you get some "Screw You Pal" responses when you call someone out? Sure. But if your skin is so thin you can't handle that, well, you should probably take up stamp collecting or something. lol

Naw......but thanks chief for the lesson, lol. Yea I'm real aware of when you can and can not release Stripers due to depth caught and or related water temps. I was taught in a far away land many light years ago by the Striper Sensai Andrew Paul Bradbury and I would stack him against anybody.
Thanks though.....lol

Oh and some of you should re-read this thread, not one single person on this thread slammed anybody for keeping within the law they only stated what ''THEY'' do as a topic of conversation. There are some on this site that need to get that chip off their shoulder, banter back and forth should be just that. Too many estragen emotions on here lately, good Lord fellas take it down a notch.

Anyone can keep what they want thats why they buy a license it is just immoral to keep a 6lb basz full of eggs in my OPINION. The guy who caught it was proud as a peacock and I can't blame him it was a nice fish. I caught 1 today guarding fry about 15 inches and chucked it back. My problem out there was guys stacking fish over the limit. I'm sure that every licensed fisherman or woman pays for the FINS program in some way. That is what gets me. There was a guy throwing a cast net today out there looking for shad and bluegills to fish with. Does me no good to call last time I did warden never showed it was a sheriff's deputy and it took him over an hour.
