They wanted to do necropsy on it to determine if it was a Wild Cougar or Pet Release.COs donot carry tranqilizers on them,it was a split decision made on site to protect the public, what if they had let it go and it killed somebodies kid the next day?
Here's a picture of it in Frankfort for the necropsy

Fish & Wildlife officers in this state don't have tranquilizers as a part of their equipment?

Wildlife Biologists do ,but not Conservation Officers, you can't hold a cougar in a tree for hours, they made the best decision they could to protect the public and property.I agree with what they did and you would too if you had something at risk

I didn't say I disagreed with it. I was asking a question. I just assumed our F&W officers all carried tranquilizers in their trucks. I guess I was wrong.

I have family in eastern ky and they swear they have see cougars roaming the hills out there. I always just thought that it was stories to scare me from going on the hillsides by myself. I always carried a 9mm up there just in case. Luckily the only thing I ever came across was coyotes.
I agree with the decision that was made to kill the animal but what if they start to establish a population in ky? Do we shoot everyone we see? I'm against doing that but understand how dangerous cougars are and what they can do to people and livestock. Curious to see how fish and wildlife handles the situation. IMO I believe it was someone's pet that got loose

If they ever establish that there is a breeding population of them here, they will be protected under endangered species laws. The same thing happened in Louisiana where I have family and friends and this past year they started protecting them.
I still haven't heard if it was a wild cougar or a pet release, but they said it was a young,125 lb male in good health. The gist of the report was leaning towards a wild cougar with no official statement to that effect.
Bourbon county is rural, but not like out west where they have millions of acres of wilderness, big difference that people don't seem to understand
So if they really are starting to move into KY, then their policy will be to shoot them all?
For now...........it will be.
And ANY SINGLE ONE OF YOU CAN.............there is no hunting season for Lions, therefore they are not out of season, and are not covered by current law.
NOT saying it is right or wrong, just saying there is no law....Yet.
Later

I personally think this was a pet that got away or was turned out. We shall see but I do think the department did the right thing here after seeing the story on WAVE 3 last evening. The decision was made because night fall was quickly approaching. It was too late to go and retrieve a tranquilizer gun therefore to error the side of public safety the animal was put down.
Exotic animals are illegal in Kentucky but there are plenty of people that feel the need to own a Lion, Tiger, Cougar or Bear with NO experience what so ever on the matter.

Everybody is saying that, but food is easy pickings for a big cat like that in this country.Like I said earlier, besides the healthy deer herd here,we've had a huge amount of dogs, pets, and small livestock come up missing the past couple years .It coincides with numerous cougar sightings in surrounding counties. I can't find it ,but I was sent a video from friends that a teenager in his deer stand took a video of a cougar on Hwy 22 between Falmouth and Williamstown around Goforth. It was a legitimate video and the cougar looked different than the one killed Monday.
I'll find it soon, folks in Falmouth know the boy who took it,just haven't got up there to ask yet.
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that we have a few young males migrating in state now, they have been steadily moving east for over 20 years, there are confirmed wild cougars in Illinois and Indiana, pictures and sightings in Ohio.
I know that you can buy them, and some people probably do turn them loose, but in honesty, what difference does it make if the thing is hunting and killing in the wild. You can turn a hog loose and in a year it's as wild as the next one, same thing applies to any animal.
We heard the same thing about bears before they said yes, they are here.We see them in Pendleton county regular now, here's one from November https://scontent-a-dfw.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/p296x100/11397_10203317194632754_279573129953614265_n.jpg?oh=e6925bca3176faa0ed3be8bb105e7d5d&oe=55041B6F

i have seen several pics of large cats with friends who have trail cams and I could hardly believe it. Maybe they were Mointain Lions?? I'm such a skeptic that I would have to see the dang thing myself to erase all doubt of it being real.
hope you get up there and talk to them.....I'd like to know.
I know bears are in Clark County since my buddy lives and hunts there. He has them on trail cams and even had the local news out there one day about bears on his property.
