What if he or she had a CCDW? I'm asking because I carry when I want and have passed a written test and fired at some targets to get my CCDW. The training was basic at best and I firmly believe most people won't carry anyway and some shouldn't because they are dangerous even without a weapon. My military training and experience with firearms far surpasses the requirements for civilians to have a CCDW.
I believe we have the right to bear arms and I hate gubment interference but I'm smart enough to recognize a bafoon when I see one and I know several that shouldn't carry even though they passed the test. Would an elected official be any different?
I'm not sure if a constable is allowed to carry or not, I would think they would be no different than anyone else. Personally I will have a hand gun close to me as much as possible. I have one in both vehicles, in the boat and a 357 in the nightstand right beside of where I sleep at. They are all fully loaded except the auto and it does not have a round in the barrel. I wouldn't want to accidently shoot anyone like volunteer Deputy Barney Fife did. They should've made him keep his bullet in his pocket.
The constable position has been called a hobby by credible law enforcement officials
I see your point, but ask the local law enforcement here about our local constable & see if they don't tell you how much help he is to them. He's dead serious about it. He also stops to check in on older folks that live alone to see that they're ok. He even took my buddy to jail a couple weeks ago for alcohol intoxication. lol He's different than most for sure, but is very serious about our end of the county. More than the local law enforcement. Believe me if someone calls him he will be there in short order. Some do make fun of him, but i guess in a way we're lucky.
I also think older folks should have to pass a drivers test along with eye exams. People either prove they can handle a vehicle or they don't get the privilege of driving.
I've always been an advocate for seniors so I have to respectfully disagree with the older folks part of your statement. I would fully support requiring everyone having to pass an eye exam and driving skills test every so often. As I'm sure you already know there are young folks that can't see very well or just can't drive and they should be weeded out as well.

I understand where you are coming from. Heck, I get a senior discount playing on certain golf courses! :)
I have had/witnessed to many old people driving cars that should not be behind the wheel. My mom is one of them, she is a danger to herself an others and could never pass a basic test on driving skills written or road test. Out of love we took the keys away....we all know when that should happen based on each their accidents and inability to comprehend road signs and conditions.
I agree and probably a better way is a periodic eye or driving skills test for everyone....it would assist in weeding out the bad and dangerous without targeting one group.

I've noticed that when a driver is doing something stupid while driving, sits a red light after it turns green, speeds up and slows down on the interstate, etc is not usually a senior driver but instead is someone using a cell phone. I would speculate that the average senior driver is a much better driver than the average non-senior driver that is using a cell phone while driving would be. I would also speculate that the same non-senior driver would be comparable to a driver that is under the influence of alcohol as far as situational awareness and reaction times go. Btw, I know it had to break your heart but you did the right thing for your Mom.
