Gas released, thats what my wife says
I was fishing Dale 4 weeks ago and see the same thing. It was crazy how much bubbles was coming up. We also thought it was fish feeding. So we pulled over to try to catch one and then seeing it was only bubbles we watched and it got as big as the boat and causing waves . And then just quit.
FWIW here was a response from KDFW
In general, when leaf litter and debris enter a lake they are decomposed by microorganisms and bacteria. My guess is that gases (such as carbon dioxide) were released by bacteria as they decomposed the leaf litter and debris on the bottom of the lake. Eventually, the gases built up and dislodged the material from the bottom and it floated to the surface. As the leaf mat neared the surface, it likely accelerated because the decreased pressure allowed the gases to expand. I've personally never witnessed this happening but I did notice numerous clumps of compacted leaves floating on the surface in the Big South Fork of Lake Cumberland this week. Perhaps a similar phenomenon was also occurring there.
