Re: Monster 76 Falls party this holiday weekend
I agree Jim.
I know that anglers watch the water level and work their fishing accordingly, but as long as a ramp is useable, why should the pleasure boater or jet-skier care about the water level? There's plenty of water in the lake for what they are going to be doing.
The media screwed the pooch here...and unfortunately the pooch was the businesses around the lake. People who don't know think the lake has dried up to nothing...while it may look substantially different, it hasn't dried up to nothing. It's still useable.
Imagine the fuel and snacks not bought at local gas stations and marinas, the hotel rooms not rented, the food not sold to tourists by grocery stores, the meals not served by restauraunts, the boats not rented...pretty staggering for a community that is used to that activity every year.
For anyone who was on nearby lakes, were there more boats than usual on Green, Laurel, Dale Hollow, Barren, etc?
Just curious, but where exactly would they put a houseboat there? Here is a link to a thread on the Cumberland board. It has pictures posted by Peter that shows basically no water at the falls. Not sure what the media should do about that.

I am VERY much aware that some areas are dry. However the lake as a whole is still there as is Indian Creek. There are plenty of places to have the party, what is disturbing is that NO ONE showed up FOR the party whatsoever.. YES I know the falls are not accessible currently.. STILL the point I am making is that the story about the lake has been over blown. Businesses like the Marina's are open and operating. There is plenty of lake there.. OVER 35000 acres. That is 3.5 times the size of Barren River Lake. and 10 times the size of 3000 acre Taylorsville Lake. The idea that some businesses are experiencing a 90% cancellation rate is scary and if the rest of the summer goes like this the entire area could be affected for years.
Go fish Lake Cumberland.. Go Water Ski at Lake Cumberland.. that is all I am saying.. is give peace a chance.. (No wait that's a song from the 60's.. too many drugs in the 60's I guess) Give Lake Cumberland a Chance.

Jim, I agree that things have been overblown, but let's think about this.
If the 76 falls were your backyard, and every year hundreds of drunken fools descended on it, breaking laws that are not enforced, would you really want them there? If so, then you are a more forgiving man than me. That being said, why do so many people want Derby Cruising stopped? I think both are ridiculous and should be stopped because they are both breaking the law! I am happy that nobody is getting drunk and shooting people on Broadway during Derby week, and I am happy that nobody got killed by a bunch of idiot drunks after the partying is over at 76 falls!
I know the give peace a chance song as well, but I wasn't born until '67 so I waited until the early 80's to experience such things LOL!
Oh no! If I ever sound like Louis Coleman again, somebody tell me so I can make the world a better place by shooting myself in the face!
Re: Monster 76 Falls party this holiday weekend
You did not sound like Louis Coleman, because there is only one of him! The media made such a big deal out of it because it helps sell papers and gets people to watch their news show. If they said the lake will be lower but their will still be plenty of water who cares about that. The media could not keep running the story for 3 weeks straight if it was not a big crisis. Ryan
Re: Monster 76 Falls party this holiday weekend
After spending the weekend around Somerset I would say tourism was down 80%. there was a few bass boats on the roads and very few pleasure boats. I'm sure they will miss the fines from the open flasks at the falls this year.

I guess I'm new wave, but I have no problems with the party at 76 falls as long as no one is getting hurt.
IF you stop and think about the lost revenue this week.. How many houseboats times $600 a day or so.. I figure close to $500,000 in lost boat rentals, then add in the food, booze, gasoline, broken boat motors that will NOT need repairing, motel and hotel rooms not rented.. and it goes OVER a million.. and why?
Because the media OVER HYPED this problem. The lake is there, there is plenty of water and no reason to stay away.
Having been educated at Murray State in news, I am ashamed of the way the media has handled this issue. The party at 76 Falls NOT happening is a major story.. that will for the most part be ignored.

Actually Sunday there was a decent crowd there according to my family who went for a look see. Jim you are right the media are a bunch of Jackels, and spread alot of untruths.
Re: Monster 76 Falls party this holiday weekend
I had heard that the whole cove of 76 falls is dry. The reason no one was there was because there was no water in that cove other than what's coming over the falls.
Is this not true?
I completely agree with splitshot about the drunk driving. That has the potential to hurt someone.
Not true, there is 14 foot of water around the pump stations.
Re: Monster 76 Falls party this holiday weekend
I fished at Green River Lake on Sat. I would just about bet the most boats and pleasure watercraft there I have ever seen on that lake. I swear there must have been 4 foot rollers going in 4 different directions it seemed like. I for one was so glad to get off that lake it ain't funny....I feel that when a lake starts getting rollers going on it like I experienced Sat. The safety fctor is just too high for some small boats to be on the lake.

Agreed. I figured it would be like that. I was on Green last year in my boat the weekend after Memorial Day and it was nuts enough then...can imagine now.

Hey Jim don't guess you were not around Somerset or the STILL PLENTY of water AND boats that where on Lake Cumberland this weekend.... !!! ALL the hotel rooms were booked in Somerset NOT ONE to, be found. The lake looked like it's typical (invasion at Normandy beach). So I think the business's on this end did pretty well !!!!!
Re: Monster 76 Falls party this holiday weekend
I live close by, and I doubt you had a trickle going over the falls, so dry here no house boat will even try and get up to the pumping station above the cove unless there drunk.
The new ramp at the dam is open looks like it would handel 8-10 boats, litterly over a 1/4 mile walk from waters edge at launch to park your vehicle,
both ramps were being used no lines and parking was available, we played over at Dale in the boat, camped at Kendell behind the dam
