Re: Tackle Store in Louisville
I think the mall would be waaaaayyyyy toooo expensive. I think way back when, there was a Orvis store in "The Mall" and as expensive as their stuff was, it didn't make it---I guess.
I hear ya on the bulk stuff. I remember when Smyrna,Middletown Bass Pro and a few others sold in bulk---it was real nice. Used to buy tubes by the hundred back then. Not now.
Prowler would be good and Sherbert may want his stuff up here--I am sure. He may sell in bulk.
Now, on the rods and reels----I can only answer for Shimano. Dealer cost is real good and a dealer can make some money on their stuff. I have no idea what dealer cost is on any other brand.
Again----just curious--no big plans in the works.
Re: Tackle Store in Louisville
Yes, Pepper Tackle is still open, and there is a new bait and tackle shop going in at Catfish Haven off of Dixie Highway. Check it out.
Re: Tackle Store in Louisville
Where is that exactly on Dixie---in relation to Gene Snyder?
Re: Tackle Store in Louisville
Just south of Gene Snyder approx. 2 miles. Just past Peppers I think. Someone correct me if Im wrong.
Re: Tackle Store in Louisville
How about an online store featuring local or regional products? Be cheaper having no overhead all you need is a big garage, basement or spare bedroom and plenty of spare time. It take some work getting it set up online and linked to many other sites and at your location. If it was out of your home you'd probably be able to write some business expense off. Just providing another angle to look at. Good luck ..
BTW...Sycamore Island in Indiana sells in bulk. Come across the I-64 bridge get off at the first exit which is at the end of the bridge. Take first right at bottom of ramp and go towards the river till you have to go either left or right. Turn right and go to the light where the new thorntons gas station is and turn right at that light go about 3 miles and when you cross the railroad tracks they are right there on the left.
Curious if a new tackle store in the Louisville area would do any good? I don't mean like the ordinary tackle store, but one that would carry products that Dicks,Wal-marts,Bass Pro and other bait shops don't usually have.
I am thinking more along the lines of like a Backwaters type store.
I would love to have a shop that carry's the "hard to get stuff" and the out of the norm stuff. I would also like the shop to showcase the many local talented bait makers we have in the area or even the state. There are a ton of guys out there locally making their own baits and would love a chance to put their stuff in a store.
I guess besides Bull Frog Creek--which is out of business, and Smyrna Bait and Tackle--which is a good store, and Pepper Tackle(are they still open?). That's about it.
The other question is this: What part of town should a store like this be in?
I would love to see this store get involved in the fishing community, help out with tournaments and maybe have room in the store for local bass clubs to have meetings, etc., etc.
All kinds of ideas running through my head about this one.
I would love to hear what you all think?
Re: Tackle Store in Louisville
Well, not a bad idea and maybe one way to get started, but then you wouold have people wanting to come by the house and by stuff.
I've had that happen on E-bay when I sold stuff. Locally people wanted to come over and pick up their purchase. I am not real fond of having strangers walking into my house and looking around.
Maybe a decent sized garage would be ok. Just doing some wintertime thinking about stuff!
Re: Tackle Store in Louisville
I think this is a great idea. If the lures are quality, I think fisherman will pay the price. It's amazing what kind of money fisherman will fork over for lures. I got a call the other day from a bass fisherman that had bought 12 lures from me last year and was looking to by some deep divers. He also wants some of our smaller cranks (not available yet). Another guy from GA (we have no shops carrying our lures in this state) called and ordered close to $300.00 worth. You would think he was stocking a shop, but he is just a fisherman. So I think there is potential for a fishing shop like the one you are talking about.
Re: Tackle Store in Louisville
I think it's risky. The internet will be your biggest challenge. I'm already buying online from 3 or 4 small guys and then there is ebay. I know I wouldn't drive more than a few miles out of my way other than a couple times a year.
You'd have to have a product that I loved and couldn't get anywhere else.
Not trying to be negative, but I thought through it myself. I worked at a bait shop in my early teens and it was great job. You get to see a lot of catches, hear some good stories, and stay up on where the bite is. I will say that if you can get the right inventory and great service, fisherman are a loyal bunch.
Yes, Pepper's is still open. I was just in there a couple days ago.
There used to be a place on Taylor Blvd not far from Churchill Downs, that I used to patronize back when I worked at the track. I don't know why he closed down, but it seems to me the South End could probably use a good bait & tackle shop. And racetrackers do love to fish. Just my 2 cents.
that was Fentress tackle, classic place till Senior passed and one son with too many problems drank it to the gutter, I often wondered what happened to Mattie after leaving Fisherman's General Store, the old store had every reel part possible, components (sp) for rod making, rod repair, lantern repair, a fishermans true heaven, one small store we so much character, "Walter had it all" will always cherish the trips to shanty hollow to bluegill fish!
