I met Bobby Westmoreland for the first time in person after several phone calls a couple of years ago when I was trying to find more information about Billy. I sure wish I watched all of his shows as I was growing up but my Dad never took me fishing even though he had the best boat money could buy in 1989, that is another story for he did not use it either. The first time I met Bobby, I ate supper at a restaurant with him, his wife and his son. Bobby's son traveled with Billy as his assistant thru Billy's tourney career and I heard a bunch of stories about Billy that night. At the end, Bobby gave me a copy of Billy's "Them Ol Brownfish" book and a couple of 8x12 photos of Billy, with one being just before he died standing on his back porch. Bobby said he had 3 copies of his book and gave me one of them. Bobby told me the story of Billy's 10+ Smallie, I think it was 10-8, which is the 3rd largest ever behind the 11-15 record and another 10-14 that some yahoo caught out of Dale as well. Bobby said they were fishing Mitchell Creek running some points to no fish and Billy turned around and casted way out into the middle of the creek. Bobby said what are you doing Billy just as the rod loaded up and Billy said only one word, which I have said a bunch of times in his honor...TROPHY. Trophy is all Billy said as he set the hook on that Monster with 4lb test line according to Bobby. Fought her like a champ all the way to the net. Bobby also said Billy had the guaranteed 12+ world record on around Christmas of one year as well on 4lb test with a jig. This time Billy fought her like a champ but the fish won as she spit it after a mighty struggle. Billy's sister moved to California then to Hawaii and used to have some of his shows taped. I called her but she could never find them. Bobby said that Billy's wife destroyed a bunch of his stuff after his death for she was going thru some problems at that time. The 10-8 fish that Billy landed was mounted and given to a local restaurant and after Billy's death, new owners came in and gutted the place and threw away the mount. If you visit the One Stop in Celina you will see a bunch of mounts that were caught by Billy as well. Speaking of the One Stop, Punisher Lures.com has a new website and Steve Headrick posted his Monday report to which he put me in it about the fish we caught over the weekend. He said just me and 8 over the weekend but it was Cliff and me and we had 11 total over the weekend on the fly. Back to Billy, I am meeting Bobby tomorrow night for supper in Celina and surely to hear more truths and lies. I will report when we get back Thursday night. Later Elnut
I was the guy you met at the hotel Saturday night. Your input helped me in catching three smallmouth on Sunday morning. One was a two pounder and two were bookend four pounders. When the sun came up about 11:00 the bite turned off. Great to meet you and your buddy Saturday and I hope to see you on the Hollow again. Ohio Ranger Rick
