Re: wade fishing near louisville?
I would suggest Canoe Ky. Elkhorn Creek in Frankfort. They will take you and your gear upstream and put you in the water. 5 miles is the one we always took. Fishing is awesome to say the least. They also have other areas like Switzer bridge which is deeper and more calm. I once got in trouble for wading as they said..."as long as your feet are on the bottom of the creek you are standing on someones private property". Most people don't mind but be careful and get permission if possible.
Re: wade fishing near louisville?
I agree Canoe KY is a great choice I rented a Kayak and fished when I went. That was fun just moving around in that little Kayak and the fishing was great.:)
Re: wade fishing near louisville?
Don't forget about the Little Blue River up in Southern Indiana. Contact Old Mill Canoe and check the rates for their 7 mile and 14 mile canoe trips you can choose from. I've only done the 7 mile one and it's worth every minute your on the water. Lots of gogle eye, small mouth, large mouth, blue gill, saugar, sunfish, catfish and more to catch. My best bait was a small Rebel Wee Crawfish crank bait in a orange and brown color.
Re: wade fishing near louisville?
Man that brings back some memories...Wee Craw. Very Nostalgic! Great thread guys.
Re: wade fishing near louisville?
I caught my biggest smallie for a creek up there in the Little Blue River on one of the Wee Craws, a nice 17" small mouth on a ultra light combo and had to have my buddy land the fish for me cause I couldn't get it close enough to me to lip her. But boy did we get bit by the infamous " Nettles " on the way to the honey hole I had on that creek / river. Those nettles will bring the biggest and baddest man to their knee's when they sting you......
Re: wade fishing near louisville?
Harrods Creek in Oldham County where route 393 crosses. You can park near the bridge and wade south. Smaller size smallmouth in deeper pools.
Re: wade fishing near louisville?
Another vote for Canoe Ky. I have done that trip numerous times. The kayaks are fun - they are recreational Kayaks, so it doesn't require the skill of a typical kayak.
As for depth, it varies. There are stretches that are great to wade. I used to wade around the georgetown area, but there are some great long stretches around franfort - right off the main road that runs from Georgetown to Frankfort (I believe it is 460). Small spinners, grubs, shakey head w/tiny paca craw (I never used this - it wasn't too popular when I lived there, but I bet it would be a hot one). Or my favorite was fly fishing with poppers, crawfish, and helgramite immatations.
What I would do is buy a Kentucky Atlas and Gazetteer. It has all the streams, and creeks listed with species of fish that are present. One of my friends and I would find one, and travel to a different creek or stream every weekend. But we went to some I have never heard of. Sometimes it would work out, and sometimes it wouldn't, but it was always an adventure and fun.

That sounds like a great resource. I'll have to pick up.
Thanks!

where is brashear's creek?
thanks!
55 to 148 east at Finchville to Figgs Store rd to Haley rd. If you're lucky there will be some one at Trailblazers to let you park and wade up the creek. Where the two creeks come together a few hundred yards up from the horsecamp is a big honeyhole.
Re: wade fishing near louisville?
If you are going to rent a canoe / kayak be sure to deal with Canoe Kentucky. They are very reasonable and provide shuttle service to the put in and you can take out right at there shop.
That way you can take your time and fish the holes as long as you want.
We fished out of kayak's in Floyds Fork on Sunday. The water had good flow so we weren't getting hung up all day. Did catch a nice smallie on a white roaster tail.
Re: wade fishing near louisville?
thanks again for all the great tips. I can't wait to check some of these place out this summer.

Great advice. Who doesn't like wading anyway...ultralight tackle and multi species. I love drop shot'n those pools. That is so money!
