Re: Side Imaging
Merc, I have had my electronics for a year now. I have a “797 c2 SI Combo NVB” at the console and a “787 c2 Combo NVB” on the bow. I also have the external antenna with the AS Interlink to network the two together. The detail in the picture is unbelievable. You can see so much structure on the bottom it is stupid. It is like starting fishing all over again. The link posted above by gump has some good info on it. You can also go to Yahoo on their message boards and find great info from users and pics of actual items people have posted. The Nay Sayers don’t like theirs because they do not take the time to read the instruction book (and by book I mean 1” thick book) on how to properly set the system up. It will take a few hours on the water to set everything to your liking. And still you will change everything again to improve it. I spent about 6-7 hours total and got this system dialed in tight (to my liking).
Fishalltime, Putting a SI model at the bow is possible the only problem is as you change direction so will the image. Meaning if you are following the bank and move to you right a little, your image will now be of the middle of the lake, not the bank, and will display that way until you go straight again. That’s why Humminbird does not recommend the SI model for TM’s.
Anyway I love mine and would not trade any other electronics for it. No I am not a Humminbird sales rep, I just did a lot of homework before buying anything.

Re: Side Imaging
Merc, I have had my electronics for a year now and the only thing better are the larger display ones. I have a “797 c2 SI Combo NVB” at the console, a “787 c2 Combo NVB” at the bow. The antenna is external and I also have the AS Interlink to network the two together. The image of the material on the bottom is so detailed it is like starting fishing all over again. Gump’s link above has great info on these things. You can also go to Yahoo’s message boards and type in side imaging for more info and pic’s from owners.
The naysayer’s (mostly stuck on Lowrance) have either not read the instruction book (and I mean 1” thick book) carefully or not taken the time to set it up. I spent about a total of 3-5 hours on the water just to get everything the way I wanted it. Once you have it dialed in to your liking, it is unbeatable. The detail of everything down there brush, rock beds, houses, cars, etc. is bad a**. The demo’s set up at bass pro or any where else is not set up completely. They just show a demo. Find someone who has their stuff dialed in and check out their set-up.
Fishalltime, the transducer for the side imaging can be used on the tm. However, it is not recommended by Humminbird (or anyone else) to be placed there and here is why. Let’s say you have the transducer mounted to the tm and are following the bank. If you turn the tm to the right the image has now shifted from the bank to the middle of the lake. Once you return back to your original course then the bank image will re-appear. So every time the tm direction is moved the image of the bottom will not be accurate.
Anyway hope this helps any wanting to get one of these systems. No I am not a HB rep or work at a marina.

Re: Side Imaging
I just bought mine yesterday and can't wait for installation, I have heard and seen nothing but good of these units but ultimately made my decision on customer support and here's why:
A friend of mine has a good friend who lost his son somewhere on the Illinois river, (it was a boating accident) and the guy could not give up finding his son, so he was on the water every day in fact it consumed his life to find his son. He called humminbird to get a price on one of these units to help him on his quest and they sent him a 1197 free of charge! Now he had documentation as to his loss and they confirmed everything in depth. He set out to map the area his son was last seen well over a year of looking he found a small child, and 2 adults still inside their cars! All this amongst numerous other findings..... and finally it happened - he found his 19yr old son and his car! "He could not have done it without the support of humminbird and the quality of the unit ".
Humminbird thumbs up! I am not a rep, dealer or anyway associated except the fact I am now a huge fan and as of yesterday new owner of one of their 797c2 SI NVB yeah baby! $1017.00 later, and compared to the garmin I have been scraping by with (graphics - yuck) that cost around $950 I beleive I'll be very happy.

Re: Side Imaging
Just had mine installed a month ago,so did my fishing partner. He has had some trouble with his.Mine works great, you can really get the upperhand on whats really down there. His was messed up at install. He couldnt get the side image to work but everything else was good.Gps was good, depth was good, except side image. So I took mine and put it on his boat and it worked just fine, brought his ,put it on mine no good.I noticed it had a rattle. He sent it to hummingbird and they told him that that was common during install. So be careful and check it before you leave with it.

So I take it he was backing the boat down the ramp and slid it into the river?

Re: Side Imaging
does the transducer have to be in a fixed mounted position ? like not on the trolling motor in order to work? i've heard this before........
i have the 1197 and it is mounted on my trolling motor. it works just fine there, but the only thing is if you make fast turns with the trolling motor it skips a little then reads right again. one of the best investments i have made last night i found a tree on a point in 10 feet of water and found a school of fish and would of had two 4 pounders two 15 inch and a slot off of it in about 45 mins. butt my dumb butt cant keep from loosing them at the boat wile trying to get the net. did land three 10 inch, the slot fish and one of the 15 inch fish. it will find the fish butt it can't catch the fish:D
