Re: Saw Jimmy Houston Today and have to tell this story
Well Raporter, I believe the PETA assumption was a fair one. Even though you are a hunter with different views and ethics doesn't neccesarily give you the power to degrade others. They may disagree with your style of hunting and overall...it's hunting. For the record, I am by far a good hunter and I have never went to a canned or fenced hunt, but I do not judge others for doing so. I will never hunt inside of a fence because it is not my style, but that's neither here nor there. When I was a child, my parents took me to Trout Haven in Estes Park in Colorado. It is a stocked pond with...you guessed it-Trout. I had a blast and caught some nice fish. These days I would not pay to fish a pond such as that because I have a different style than when I was 5. I don't disagree with it and especially on a public forum where PETA members lurk to see what "cruel" things us outdoorsmen and women are doing these days to hunt, kill, and eat God's creatures. The way I look at it is that it's peolpe like yourself that make exceptions to the rules based on your morals and ethics which in turn benefits these tree-huggin' radicals. When you make an exception to something such as this, you give them a leg to stand on. Same as if the liberals want to ban assualt rifles and you make an exception because all you own is pistols and shotguns. Well, guess what? Next they want your pistols. You just then screwed yourself because you made an exception because of your own beliefs, morals, ethics, etc. You can disagree with me here all you want, but all I say is don't degrade your fellow hunters and fisherman to make a personal point. I really don't care about your opinion, but they do, and more than likely...your statement gave them motivation to pursue taking another right from us.

Obviously you have not bothered to watch the video. It's idiotic action like that that gets the PETA jerks the attention they need. Was it legal? No it was not and If you don't believe this just contact Mr Bellar ( the owner of the facility)and ask him. Provided he is out of prison by now. I did not degrade any fellow hunter or fisherman, that was you. Now if you want to watch and support Old Jimmy, feel free. I never said not to. However you might ask him if he thought what he did was right. It was hunters who fought this activity in this state, not PETA. I was at the meetings, just a bunch of us HUNTERS and the high fence operators. No PETA to be seen. You quite obviously are very new to fighting PETA if you think this gives them any fuel. Again, watch the video then ask yourself "Who is really giving PETA amunition".
JH posted this buck on his web page entitled "Elusive Indiana buck", you will notice it is not there anymore. How about looking at it a little different. Suppose someone raises a 25 pound bass in a pond and offers it to the high bidder. Then moneybags (Who happens to make his money on outdoor shows) shows up and the owner nets the bass and puts it in a barrel where Mr moneybags can snag it. He then puts it on his website telling how he caught the elusive record bass. Of course you cannot complain about it because it might give PETA another reason to hate us.

Don't get me wrong, I understand your points, and most people probably do. I haven't watched the video, and probably don't want to see it. The bottom line is your statement in general to high fence, low fence, and enclosed. I don't agree with feeding, salt blocks, doe piss, etc. , but I don't slam it, because it may affect the sport somehow. I don't agree with trapping with bait or not having a trap signed or flagged. In fact, my brothers lab almost got her foot trapped when we were duck hunting. I'm not going to bash trapping because of my views.
In fact I didn't even care for decoys while duck hunting, but I now use them because it wouldn't be duck hunting if I didn't. I didn't slam it at first because I didn't understand that some people need these decoys. Now I use them and I am glad that I do. At first, I just didn't understand it and felt it was not a fair hunt. I felt it "cheapend" the sport. Now I realize that you need decoys to get birds.
Lures for catching fish? I guess if you wanted everything to be harder you could catch them by hand? Some people catch them by hand. Have you ever seen the guys who catch catfish while 'noodling' with their bare hands? Pretty cool stuff. I wonder if they bash the fishermen that use bait? I could ramble on to save my opinion, but I think you get my point. If you don't agree with it that's fine, but in my opinion...keep it to yourself (respectfully speaking).

So in your opinion Ol Jimmy is OK for doing his criminal act but anyone who points it out is a bad guy. What does using artificial bait have to do with snagging fish in a barrel? My post was not about the enclosure itself but JH shooting a drugged deer that was propped up against a fence numerous times while doing his famous cackle. Until that time since Billy Westmorland died he was my favorite to watch. I too thought he was a man of great character. I was wrong. One last thing then I am done. This is a "sides" thing, those who think what he did dispicable and those who think it is alright. Your "side" lost all credibility when the first response was unfounded insinuations and name calling.

I have looked over this thread and reread it from start to finish. From the beginning I was believing you were speaking of fence hunting in general. I was wrong and apoligize. I guess the video is similar to the guy going to a petting zoo and killing an animal for kicks. I view all of it as a precious life and I respect all living things. I will say I agree with you, Raporter, but if one was to bring up fence hunting as a no, no, I would quietly agree, but keep my mouth shut because everyone has their styles and most are different than mine.

OK then one more. Apology accepted. No one should ever call a fellow outdoors person a PETA person. I will make one thing clear though. I am against high fence "hunting" as it is done in Indiana. In Texas where they are hunting wild bred animals I can go along with. These in Indiana are raised on farms mainly by Amish and they are used to human contact. Soon these place will go the way of the dinosaur(many already have).
Now lets go fishing. I live three miles from the South Lick ramp but am heading to Lick Fork to fish the main lake.
Re: Saw Jimmy Houston Today and have to tell this story
I have never seen a fenced in area anywhere...Texas or Indiana. So I guess it pays to know what you are talking about. Good luck fishing.
Re: Saw Jimmy Houston Today and have to tell this story
lol I never thought this would turn out this way.

I have had lunch with deer farmers. I knew how they felt and they knew how I felt. Neither of us had any thoughts of changing the others mind but that didn't mean we couldn't be civil to each other.
