Re: Fishing at Cannelton Dam
I fish meldahl alot and the way I fish up here for the hybrids for top water it is called a launcher with a 12`6" rod that throws a one to six ounce with a diawa emblem pro reel with power pro 20/6. I dont know that application of your fishing but this same princible should work down there. Look up the laucher on www.flexcoat.com you dont have to have the launcher but the same princible should work down there, I rig the launcher at top barrel swivel with my braid and then at the bottom of the barrel swivel I rig 30lb mono because it is stiff and wont tangle and a bait hook with a white shad body three inch white from action-plastics.com and a mustab baitholder hook. I throw it out in the gates and let it float with the flow or throw it where the fish are busting the water. Depending on how close you are you can do the same thing with a catfish float or small weighted float. I am telling you this can be deadly.

Re: Fishing at Cannelton Dam
They are putting generatiors there soon and have already begun to clear the banks of the trees and such. It will restrict access from the bank, but I do not know when. I used to fish from the bank alot there, espically in the early spring for sauger and also caught several stripers there, there is also a ramp on the Ind side next to the new bridge it is about a 3 to 4 mile run to the dam. When they get the generatiors going the fishing should improve. If you ever want to go Mhall give nme a yell as I am not far from there.
"As for the fishing, you have to get as close to the first gate as possible."
Roughly, how long of a cast is that? What is the typical depth around there?
Andrew
If you're lucky enough to get the gate spot first, its around a 30-40ft. toss. If you are nto on that spot it is still only a bit further, I have no trouble reaching it with a 1/4 oz. sauger jig.
As for the depth, there is a hole there that drops pretty quick, it starts coming up down the bank where the point is on the big rocks. Oh, and be careful on the rocks they are big and sometimes hard to navigate, don't ask me how I know :D

Thanks Tracker, believe I can make that cast without the long rod.
