Re: Looking to buy 9 yr old deer rifle?
Both are good dependable rifles. The H&R can also be re-fitted to any caliberr along the way( in case you want to start off with a lighter load) by sending the reciever to the company. This is done so that each additional barrel is mascined to fit that reciever for safety reasons. It also comes with the synthetic stocks. Another good quality rifle that is very dependable and affodable is the Stevens or Savage line. But all would be hard pressed to replace a proven Zebco 33.
How accurate is the .243 on this I bought him the .22 .410 in the Rossi should have got the .243 but wasnt thinking at the time I guess.
The .243 is a tack driver. It is tapped for a scope and I put one on and had it bore sighted. It didn't take long to get it dead center at 100 yards.
One thing I have noticed is the loads. My son shoots Remington Core Locs in 100 grain and he has killed three deer with it. Two he shot in the shoulder and dropped them, but the one that didn't hit shoulder bone left very little blood trail and was a tough tracking job. There doesn't seem to be much expansion in this load, but the accuracy is very good.
Perhaps someone that is a handloader could experiment with relaods that would probably produce better results.
BTW, I think you can order the .243 barrel to fit the firearm you have (which I believe is called a Matched Pair).
Re: Looking to buy 9 yr old deer rifle?
Why would you want to buy a nine year old rifle? Heck spend the money and buy a new one.-------sorry, I could not resist. slow day at the office.

Re: Looking to buy 9 yr old deer rifle?
I would have to second the rossi combo as stated before. When he gets big enough or he may already be a 3030 is hard to beat and you wont have to worry about the lenght of the stock.. ie the eye relief if stock is too short or too long.. I went through this with my oldest boy.
That's a bit much don't ya think???? There is a hunting board on this site but the guy just asked a simple question, Geeze.
Yeah, yeah ok, I overreacted. Still, the rules are clear, we all agreed to them before we were allowed to post, and if everybody posted stuff like this, it would quickly turn into something other than what it is, a FISHING discussion board.
Re: Looking to buy 9 yr old deer rifle?
Good post. However i would keep the zebco, it might be a classic someday <grin> and as you all know the world record flathead was caught on a zebco 33. IMO i would keep the zebco, and just buy the bolt action .243 if he can handle it. And besides this might be a fishing board but I think there is a lot more stuff on here besides fishing. I know i laughed till i cried when i read Jims post about the brown bears scat having bells in it and smelling of pepper.
