I'll add another note if it hasn't been mentioned already. Check your hoses regularly. I've got a 89 Mariner and a couple of years ago the oil line from the pump was dry rotted and broke into while I was full speed down TVille. Needless to say, I had to have the motor rebuilt. So another vote for mixing yourself. (or at least checking your hoses):)
I had a 1990 80hp mercury and the oil pump went out . The engine had to be rebuilt and after the engine was fixed took it out 3 times and the oil pump went out again. Had it took off and ran for two years before getting rid of it with no problems. If you are in doubt take it off it is very expensive to have the powerhead rebuilt.

Smartest move you'll ever make!!! If Mercury's Performance Division doesn't use it, then there's got to be a good reason why!!!
